ॐ नागाधीश्वरविष्टरां फणिफणोत्तंसोरु रत्नावली-
भास्वद्देहलतां दिवाकरनिभां नेत्रत्रयोद्भासिताम् ।
मालाकुम्भकपालनीरजकरां चन्द्रार्धचूडां परां
सर्वज्ञेश्वरभैरवाङ्गनिलयां पद्मावतीं चिन्तये ॥

oṃ nāgādhīśvaraviṣṭarāṃ phaṇiphaṇottaṃsoru ratnāvalī-
bhāsvaddehalatāṃ divākaranibhāṃ netratrayodbhāsitām |
mālākumbhakapālanīrajakarāṃ candrārdhacūḍāṃ parāṃ
sarvajñeśvarabhairavāṅganilayāṃ padmāvatīṃ cintaye ||
Meaning (Meditation verse.) I meditate upon the supreme Goddess Padmāvatī — seated on the throne of the lord of serpents (Śeṣa), her creeper-like body glowing with rows of gems on the serpents' hoods, radiant as the sun, illumined by three eyes, bearing in her hands a rosary, a water-pot, a skull, and a lotus, crowned with the crescent moon, and dwelling in the person of Bhairava, lord of the all-knowing.
ॐ ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ६.१॥
oṃ ṛṣiruvāca || 6.1||
Meaning Om. The sage (Mārkaṇḍeya) said —
इत्याकर्ण्य वचो देव्याः स दूतोऽमर्षपूरितः ।
समाचष्ट समागम्य दैत्यराजाय विस्तरात् ॥ ६.२॥
ityākarṇya vaco devyāḥ sa dūto'marṣapūritaḥ |
samācaṣṭa samāgamya daityarājāya vistarāt || 6.2||
Meaning Having heard these words of the Goddess, that messenger, filled with indignation, went to the demon-king (Śumbha) and reported everything to him in detail.
तस्य दूतस्य तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्यासुरराट् ततः ।
सक्रोधः प्राह दैत्यानामधिपं धूम्रलोचनम् ॥ ६.३॥
tasya dūtasya tadvākyamākarṇyāsurarāṭ tataḥ |
sakrodhaḥ prāha daityānāmadhipaṃ dhūmralocanam || 6.3||
Meaning Hearing those words of the messenger, the lord of the asuras (Śumbha), filled with wrath, then said to Dhūmralocana, the commander of the daityas —
हे धूम्रलोचनाशु त्वं स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः ।
तामानय बलाद्दुष्टां केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम् ॥ ६.४॥
he dhūmralocanāśu tvaṃ svasainyaparivāritaḥ |
tāmānaya balādduṣṭāṃ keśākarṣaṇavihvalām || 6.4||
Meaning "O Dhūmralocana! Go quickly, surrounded by your army, and bring that wicked woman here by force, seizing her and dragging her helpless by the hair."
तत्परित्राणदः कश्चिद्यदि वोत्तिष्ठतेऽपरः ।
स हन्तव्योऽमरो वापि यक्षो गन्धर्व एव वा ॥ ६.५॥
tatparitrāṇadaḥ kaścidyadi vottiṣṭhate'paraḥ |
sa hantavyo'maro vāpi yakṣo gandharva eva vā || 6.5||
Meaning "And if anyone else should rise up to protect her — be he a god, a yakṣa, or even a gandharva — he too is to be slain."
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ६.६॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 6.6||
तेनाज्ञप्तस्ततः शीघ्रं स दैत्यो धूम्रलोचनः ।
वृतः षष्ट्या सहस्राणामसुराणां द्रुतं ययौ ॥ ६.७॥
tenājñaptastataḥ śīghraṃ sa daityo dhūmralocanaḥ |
vṛtaḥ ṣaṣṭyā sahasrāṇāmasurāṇāṃ drutaṃ yayau || 6.7||
Meaning Commanded by him, the demon Dhūmralocana at once set out swiftly, surrounded by sixty thousand asuras.
स दृष्ट्वा तां ततो देवीं तुहिनाचलसंस्थिताम् ।
जगादोच्चैः प्रयाहीति मूलं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥ ६.८॥
sa dṛṣṭvā tāṃ tato devīṃ tuhinācalasaṃsthitām |
jagādoccaiḥ prayāhīti mūlaṃ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ || 6.8||
Meaning Then, seeing the Goddess seated upon the snow-mountain (Himālaya), he called out loudly, "Come to the presence of Śumbha and Niśumbha."
न चेत्प्रीत्याद्य भवती मद्भर्तारमुपैष्यति ।
ततो बलान्नयाम्येष केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम् ॥ ६.९॥
na cetprītyādya bhavatī madbhartāramupaiṣyati |
tato balānnayāmyeṣa keśākarṣaṇavihvalām || 6.9||
Meaning "If you will not today come willingly, with goodwill, to my master, then I shall take you by force, dragging you helpless by the hair."
देव्युवाच ॥ ६.१०॥
devyuvāca || 6.10||
Meaning The Goddess said —
दैत्येश्वरेण प्रहितो बलवान्बलसंवृतः ।
बलान्नयसि मामेवं ततः किं ते करोम्यहम् ॥ ६.११॥
daityeśvareṇa prahito balavānbalasaṃvṛtaḥ |
balānnayasi māmevaṃ tataḥ kiṃ te karomyaham || 6.11||
Meaning "You are a mighty envoy sent by the lord of the daityas and are surrounded by an army; if you would thus carry me off by force, then what can I do about it?" (spoken with calm irony, before she acts).
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ६.१२॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 6.12||
इत्युक्तः सोऽभ्यधावत्तामसुरो धूम्रलोचनः ।
हुङ्कारेणैव तं भस्म सा चकाराम्बिका तदा ॥ ६.१३॥
ityuktaḥ so'bhyadhāvattāmasuro dhūmralocanaḥ |
huṅkāreṇaiva taṃ bhasma sā cakārāmbikā tadā || 6.13||
Meaning So addressed, the asura Dhūmralocana rushed upon her; and then Ambikā reduced him to ashes with a mere utterance of "Huṁ."
अथ क्रुद्धं महासैन्यमसुराणां तथाम्बिका ।
ववर्ष सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तथा शक्तिपरश्वधैः ॥ ६.१४॥
atha kruddhaṃ mahāsainyamasurāṇāṃ tathāmbikā |
vavarṣa sāyakaistīkṣṇaistathā śaktiparaśvadhaiḥ || 6.14||
Meaning Thereupon Ambikā rained down upon the enraged, mighty army of the asuras sharp arrows, and lances (śakti) and battle-axes.
ततो धुतसटः कोपात्कृत्वा नादं सुभैरवम् ।
पपातासुरसेनायां सिंहो देव्याः स्ववाहनः ॥ ६.१५॥
tato dhutasaṭaḥ kopātkṛtvā nādaṃ subhairavam |
papātāsurasenāyāṃ siṃho devyāḥ svavāhanaḥ || 6.15||
Meaning Then the Goddess's own mount, the lion, shaking its mane in fury and giving a most terrifying roar, fell upon the asura host.
कांश्चित्करप्रहारेण दैत्यानास्येन चापरान् ।
आक्रान्त्या चाधरेणान्यान् जघान स महासुरान् ॥ ६.१६॥
kāṃścitkaraprahāreṇa daityānāsyena cāparān |
ākrāntyā cādhareṇānyān jaghāna sa mahāsurān || 6.16||
Meaning That lion slew some of those great asuras with a blow of its paw, others with its jaws, and yet others by pinning and crushing them down beneath it.
केषाञ्चित्पाटयामास नखैः कोष्ठानि केसरी ।
तथा तलप्रहारेण शिरांसि कृतवान्पृथक् ॥ ६.१७॥
keṣāñcitpāṭayāmāsa nakhaiḥ koṣṭhāni kesarī |
tathā talaprahāreṇa śirāṃsi kṛtavānpṛthak || 6.17||
Meaning The lion tore open the entrails of some with its claws, and with a single stroke of its paw struck the heads of others clean off their bodies.
विच्छिन्नबाहुशिरसः कृतास्तेन तथापरे ।
पपौ च रुधिरं कोष्ठादन्येषां धुतकेसरः ॥ ६.१८॥
vicchinnabāhuśirasaḥ kṛtāstena tathāpare |
papau ca rudhiraṃ koṣṭhādanyeṣāṃ dhutakesaraḥ || 6.18||
Meaning He severed the arms and heads of still others, and, tossing his mane, drank the blood from the bellies of yet others.
क्षणेन तद्बलं सर्वं क्षयं नीतं महात्मना ।
तेन केसरिणा देव्या वाहनेनातिकोपिना ॥ ६.१९॥
kṣaṇena tadbalaṃ sarvaṃ kṣayaṃ nītaṃ mahātmanā |
tena kesariṇā devyā vāhanenātikopinā || 6.19||
Meaning In but a moment that entire army was brought to destruction by that great-souled, exceedingly enraged lion, the Goddess's mount.
श्रुत्वा तमसुरं देव्या निहतं धूम्रलोचनम् ।
बलं च क्षयितं कृत्स्नं देवीकेसरिणा ततः ॥ ६.२०॥
śrutvā tamasuraṃ devyā nihataṃ dhūmralocanam |
balaṃ ca kṣayitaṃ kṛtsnaṃ devīkesariṇā tataḥ || 6.20||
Meaning When Śumbha heard that the asura Dhūmralocana had been slain by the Goddess, and that his whole army had been destroyed by the Goddess's lion —
चुकोप दैत्याधिपतिः शुम्भः प्रस्फुरिताधरः ।
आज्ञापयामास च तौ चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ ॥ ६.२१॥
cukopa daityādhipatiḥ śumbhaḥ prasphuritādharaḥ |
ājñāpayāmāsa ca tau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau || 6.21||
Meaning then Śumbha, the lord of the daityas, blazed with rage, his lips quivering, and he commanded the two great asuras Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa —
हे चण्ड हे मुण्ड बलैर्बहुभिः परिवारितौ ।
तत्र गच्छत गत्वा च सा समानीयतां लघु ॥ ६.२२॥
he caṇḍa he muṇḍa balairbahubhiḥ parivāritau |
tatra gacchata gatvā ca sā samānīyatāṃ laghu || 6.22||
Meaning "O Caṇḍa! O Muṇḍa! Surrounded by many forces, go there; and having gone, let her be brought here quickly."
केशेष्वाकृष्य बद्ध्वा वा यदि वः संशयो युधि ।
तदाशेषायुधैः सर्वैरसुरैर्विनिहन्यताम् ॥ ६.२३॥
keśeṣvākṛṣya baddhvā vā yadi vaḥ saṃśayo yudhi |
tadāśeṣāyudhaiḥ sarvairasurairvinihanyatām || 6.23||
Meaning "Bring her dragged by the hair or bound fast; but if you have any doubt (of success) in the battle, then let her be slain by all the asuras with every one of their weapons."
तस्यां हतायां दुष्टायां सिंहे च विनिपातिते ।
शीघ्रमागम्यतां बद्ध्वा गृहीत्वा तामथाम्बिकाम् ॥ ६.२४॥
tasyāṃ hatāyāṃ duṣṭāyāṃ siṃhe ca vinipātite |
śīghramāgamyatāṃ baddhvā gṛhītvā tāmathāmbikām || 6.24||
Meaning "When that wicked woman is slain and the lion struck down, seize and bind that Ambikā and return here at once."
