उत्तरचरित्रपाठे विनियोगः ।
Meaning Viniyoga (ritual application of the Uttara-charitra recitation): its seer is Rudra, its presiding deity is Sri Mahasarasvati, its metre is Anushtup, its power (shakti) is Bhima, its seed-syllable (bija) is Bhramari, its principle (tattva) is the Sun, and its essential form is the Samaveda. This application is made in the recitation of the Uttara-charitra for the pleasure of Sri Mahasarasvati.
। ध्यानम् ।
घण्टाशूलहलानि शङ्खमुसले चक्रं धनुः सायकं
हस्ताब्जैर्दधतीं घनान्तविलसच्छीतांशुतुल्यप्रभाम् ।
गौरीदेहसमुद्भवां त्रिजगतामाधारभूतां महा-
पूर्वामत्र सरस्वतीमनुभजे शुम्भादिदैत्यार्दिनीम् ॥

ghaṇṭāśūlahalāni śaṅkhamusale cakraṃ dhanuḥ sāyakaṃ
hastābjairdadhatīṃ ghanāntavilasacchītāṃśutulyaprabhām |
gaurīdehasamudbhavāṃ trijagatāmādhārabhūtāṃ mahā-
pūrvāmatra sarasvatīmanubhaje śumbhādidaityārdinīm ||
Meaning Meditation: I adore here that Mahasarasvati who bears in her lotus-hands the bell, spear, plough, conch, pestle, discus, bow and arrow; whose radiance is like the cool moon shining at the edge of the clouds; who arose from the body of Gauri, who is the support of the three worlds, and who is the slayer of the demons headed by Shumbha.
ॐ क्लीं ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ५.१॥
oṃ klīṃ ṛṣiruvāca || 5.1||
Meaning Om Klim. The Rishi (Markandeya) said — (invocatory line introducing the narration).
पुरा शुम्भनिशुम्भाभ्यामसुराभ्यां शचीपतेः ।
त्रैलोक्यं यज्ञभागाश्च हृता मदबलाश्रयात् ॥ ५.२॥
purā śumbhaniśumbhābhyāmasurābhyāṃ śacīpateḥ |
trailokyaṃ yajñabhāgāśca hṛtā madabalāśrayāt || 5.2||
Meaning In olden times the two asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha, relying on their arrogance and might, seized from Indra (the lord of Shachi) the sovereignty of the three worlds and the shares of the sacrifices.
तावेव सूर्यतां तद्वदधिकारं तथैन्दवम् ।
कौबेरमथ याम्यं च चक्राते वरुणस्य च ॥ ५.३॥
tāveva sūryatāṃ tadvadadhikāraṃ tathaindavam |
kauberamatha yāmyaṃ ca cakrāte varuṇasya ca || 5.3||
Meaning Those very two took upon themselves the office of the Sun, and likewise that of the Moon, of Kubera, of Yama, and of Varuna.
तावेव पवनर्द्धिं च चक्रतुर्वह्निकर्म च ।
ततो देवा विनिर्धूता भ्रष्टराज्याः पराजिताः ॥ ५.४॥
tāveva pavanarddhiṃ ca cakraturvahnikarma ca |
tato devā vinirdhūtā bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ || 5.4||
Meaning Those two likewise usurped the powers of Vayu (the wind-god) and the function of Agni (the fire-god). Thereupon the gods, cast out, deprived of their kingdoms, were defeated.
हृताधिकारास्त्रिदशास्ताभ्यां सर्वे निराकृताः ।
महासुराभ्यां तां देवीं संस्मरन्त्यपराजिताम् ॥ ५.५॥
hṛtādhikārāstridaśāstābhyāṃ sarve nirākṛtāḥ |
mahāsurābhyāṃ tāṃ devīṃ saṃsmarantyaparājitām || 5.5||
Meaning Their authority taken away and all of them cast aside by those two great asuras, the gods called to mind that invincible Goddess.
तयास्माकं वरो दत्तो यथापत्सु स्मृताखिलाः ।
भवतां नाशयिष्यामि तत्क्षणात्परमापदः ॥ ५.६॥
tayāsmākaṃ varo datto yathāpatsu smṛtākhilāḥ |
bhavatāṃ nāśayiṣyāmi tatkṣaṇātparamāpadaḥ || 5.6||
Meaning (They recalled) the boon she had given them: 'Whenever you all remember me in adversities, at that very moment I shall destroy your gravest calamities.'
इति कृत्वा मतिं देवा हिमवन्तं नगेश्वरम् ।
जग्मुस्तत्र ततो देवीं विष्णुमायां प्रतुष्टुवुः ॥ ५.७॥
iti kṛtvā matiṃ devā himavantaṃ nageśvaram |
jagmustatra tato devīṃ viṣṇumāyāṃ pratuṣṭuvuḥ || 5.7||
Meaning Having resolved thus, the gods went to Himavat, the lord of mountains, and there they earnestly praised the Goddess who is the Maya of Vishnu.
देवा ऊचुः ॥ ५.८॥
devā ūcuḥ || 5.8||
नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै शिवायै सततं नमः ।
नमः प्रकृत्यै भद्रायै नियताः प्रणताः स्म ताम् ॥ ५.९॥
namo devyai mahādevyai śivāyai satataṃ namaḥ |
namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām || 5.9||
Meaning Salutation to the Devi, to the Mahadevi; salutation ever to Shiva, the auspicious one. Salutation to Prakriti, to Bhadra the benign; with self-restraint we bow low to her.
रौद्रायै नमो नित्यायै गौर्यै धात्र्यै नमो नमः ।
ज्योत्स्नायै चेन्दुरूपिण्यै सुखायै सततं नमः ॥ ५.१०॥
raudrāyai namo nityāyai gauryai dhātryai namo namaḥ |
jyotsnāyai cendurūpiṇyai sukhāyai satataṃ namaḥ || 5.10||
Meaning Salutation to Raudra (the terrible) and to Nitya (the eternal); to Gauri and to Dhatri (the sustainer), salutation again and again. To her who is moonlight and of the form of the moon, and to her who is happiness, salutation for ever.
कल्याण्यै प्रणतां वृद्ध्यै सिद्ध्यै कुर्मो नमो नमः ।
नैरृत्यै भूभृतां लक्ष्म्यै शर्वाण्यै ते नमो नमः ॥ ५.११॥
kalyāṇyai praṇatāṃ vṛddhyai siddhyai kurmo namo namaḥ |
nairṛtyai bhūbhṛtāṃ lakṣmyai śarvāṇyai te namo namaḥ || 5.11||
Meaning To Kalyani (the auspicious), to Vriddhi (prosperity) of those who bow, and to Siddhi (attainment), we offer salutation again and again. To Nairriti, to the Lakshmi of kings, and to Sharvani (Shiva's consort) — to you, O Devi, salutation again and again.
दुर्गायै दुर्गपारायै सारायै सर्वकारिण्यै ।
ख्यात्यै तथैव कृष्णायै धूम्रायै सततं नमः ॥ ५.१२॥
durgāyai durgapārāyai sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai |
khyātyai tathaiva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satataṃ namaḥ || 5.12||
Meaning To Durga, to her who carries one across difficulties (Durgapara), to Sara (the essence), to Sarvakarini (the doer of all); to Khyati (renown), likewise to Krishna (the dark one) and to Dhumra (the smoke-hued), salutation for ever.
अतिसौम्यातिरौद्रायै नतास्तस्यै नमो नमः ।
नमो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.१३॥
atisaumyātiraudrāyai natāstasyai namo namaḥ |
namo jagatpratiṣṭhāyai devyai kṛtyai namo namaḥ || 5.13||
Meaning To her who is at once exceedingly gentle and exceedingly fierce, we bow — salutation to her again and again. Salutation to her who is the foundation of the world, to the Devi who is Action (Kriti), salutation again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु विष्णुमायेति शब्दिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.१४-१६॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu viṣṇumāyeti śabditā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.14-16||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings and is spoken of as Vishnumaya (the delusive power of Vishnu), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु चेतनेत्यभिधीयते ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.१७-१९॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu cetanetyabhidhīyate |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.17-19||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings and is designated as Consciousness (Chetana), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु बुद्धिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.२०-२२॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu buddhirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.20-22||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Intelligence (Buddhi), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु निद्रारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.२३-२५॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu nidrārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.23-25||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Sleep (Nidra), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु क्षुधारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.२६-२८॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu kṣudhārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.26-28||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Hunger (Kshudha), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु छायारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.२९-३१॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu chāyārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.29-31||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Shadow/Reflection (Chhaya), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.३२-३४॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.32-34||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Power (Shakti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु तृष्णारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.३५-३७॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu tṛṣṇārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.35-37||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Thirst/Craving (Trishna), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु क्षान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.३८-४०॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu kṣāntirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.38-40||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Forbearance/Forgiveness (Kshanti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु जातिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.४१-४३॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu jātirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.41-43||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Species/Kind (Jati), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु लज्जारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.४४-४६॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu lajjārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.44-46||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Modesty (Lajja), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.४७-४९॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śāntirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.47-49||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Peace (Shanti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु श्रद्धारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.५०-५२॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śraddhārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.50-52||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Faith (Shraddha), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु कान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.५३-५५॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu kāntirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.53-55||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Loveliness/Radiance (Kanti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु लक्ष्मीरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.५६-५८॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu lakṣmīrūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.56-58||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Fortune/Prosperity (Lakshmi), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु वृत्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.५९-६१॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu vṛttirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.59-61||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Activity/Function (Vritti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु स्मृतिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.६२-६४॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu smṛtirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.62-64||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Memory (Smriti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु दयारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.६५-६७॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu dayārūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.65-67||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Compassion (Daya), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु तुष्टिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.६८-७०॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu tuṣṭirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.68-70||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Contentment (Tushti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मातृरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.७१-७३॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu mātṛrūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.71-73||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of the Mother (Matri), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु भ्रान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.७४-७६॥
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu bhrāntirūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.74-76||
Meaning To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of Error/Delusion (Bhranti), salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
इन्द्रियाणामधिष्ठात्री भूतानां चाखिलेषु या ।
भूतेषु सततं तस्यै व्याप्त्यै देव्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.७७॥
indriyāṇāmadhiṣṭhātrī bhūtānāṃ cākhileṣu yā |
bhūteṣu satataṃ tasyai vyāptyai devyai namo namaḥ || 5.77||
Meaning To the Devi who is the presiding power of the senses of all beings, and who is ever present pervading all created things — to that Goddess who is All-Pervasion (Vyapti), salutation again and again.
चितिरूपेण या कृत्स्नमेतद् व्याप्य स्थिता जगत् ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥ ५.७८-८०॥
citirūpeṇa yā kṛtsnametad vyāpya sthitā jagat |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ || 5.78-80||
Meaning To her who, in the form of Consciousness (Chiti), abides pervading this entire world, salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, again and again.
स्तुता सुरैः पूर्वमभीष्टसंश्रया-
त्तथा सुरेन्द्रेण दिनेषु सेविता ।
करोतु सा नः शुभहेतुरीश्वरी
शुभानि भद्राण्यभिहन्तु चापदः ॥ ५.८१॥
stutā suraiḥ pūrvamabhīṣṭasaṃśrayā-
ttathā surendreṇa dineṣu sevitā |
karotu sā naḥ śubhaheturīśvarī
śubhāni bhadrāṇyabhihantu cāpadaḥ || 5.81||
Meaning She who was praised of old by the gods for the fulfilment of their desires, and who is served day by day by Indra, lord of the gods — may that sovereign Goddess, the source of all good, bring us blessings and welfare, and destroy our calamities.
या साम्प्रतं चोद्धतदैत्यतापितै-
रस्माभिरीशा च सुरैर्नमस्यते ।
या च स्मृता तत्क्षणमेव हन्ति नः
सर्वापदो भक्तिविनम्रमूर्तिभिः ॥ ५.८२॥
yā sāmprataṃ coddhatadaityatāpitai-
rasmābhirīśā ca surairnamasyate |
yā ca smṛtā tatkṣaṇameva hanti naḥ
sarvāpado bhaktivinamramūrtibhiḥ || 5.82||
Meaning The sovereign Goddess who now is worshipped by us gods, tormented by insolent demons, and who, when remembered by us who bow down in devotion, at that very instant destroys all our calamities — (may she protect us).
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ५.८३॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 5.83||
एवं स्तवाभियुक्तानां देवानां तत्र पार्वती ।
स्नातुमभ्याययौ तोये जाह्नव्या नृपनन्दन ॥ ५.८४॥
evaṃ stavābhiyuktānāṃ devānāṃ tatra pārvatī |
snātumabhyāyayau toye jāhnavyā nṛpanandana || 5.84||
Meaning O prince (delight of the king)! While the gods were thus engaged in praise, Parvati came there to bathe in the waters of the Ganga (Jahnavi).
साब्रवीत्तान् सुरान् सुभ्रूर्भवद्भिः स्तूयतेऽत्र का ।
शरीरकोशतश्चास्याः समुद्भूताब्रवीच्छिवा ॥ ५.८५॥
sābravīttān surān subhrūrbhavadbhiḥ stūyate'tra kā |
śarīrakośataścāsyāḥ samudbhūtābravīcchivā || 5.85||
Meaning Parvati of fair brows asked those gods, 'Who is being praised here by you?' Then the auspicious Goddess (Ambika/Shiva), springing forth from the sheath of her (Parvati's) own body, replied —
स्तोत्रं ममैतत्क्रियते शुम्भदैत्यनिराकृतैः ।
देवैः समेतैः समरे निशुम्भेन पराजितैः ॥ ५.८६॥
stotraṃ mamaitatkriyate śumbhadaityanirākṛtaiḥ |
devaiḥ sametaiḥ samare niśumbhena parājitaiḥ || 5.86||
Meaning (Ambika said,) 'This hymn is being offered to me by the assembled gods who have been cast out by the demon Shumbha and defeated in battle by Nishumbha.'
शरीरकोशाद्यत्तस्याः पार्वत्या निःसृताम्बिका ।
कौशिकीति समस्तेषु ततो लोकेषु गीयते ॥ ५.८७॥
śarīrakośādyattasyāḥ pārvatyā niḥsṛtāmbikā |
kauśikīti samasteṣu tato lokeṣu gīyate || 5.87||
Meaning Because Ambika issued forth from the bodily sheath (kosha) of Parvati, she is therefore sung of as 'Kaushiki' throughout all the worlds.
तस्यां विनिर्गतायां तु कृष्णाभूत्सापि पार्वती ।
कालिकेति समाख्याता हिमाचलकृताश्रया ॥ ५.८८॥
tasyāṃ vinirgatāyāṃ tu kṛṣṇābhūtsāpi pārvatī |
kāliketi samākhyātā himācalakṛtāśrayā || 5.88||
Meaning When she (Kaushiki) had come forth, Parvati too became dark-hued and, taking her abode on the Himalaya, became renowned as 'Kalika'.
ततोऽम्बिकां परं रूपं बिभ्राणां सुमनोहरम् ।
ददर्श चण्डो मुण्डश्च भृत्यौ शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥ ५.८९॥
tato'mbikāṃ paraṃ rūpaṃ bibhrāṇāṃ sumanoharam |
dadarśa caṇḍo muṇḍaśca bhṛtyau śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ || 5.89||
Meaning Thereupon Chanda and Munda, two servants of Shumbha and Nishumbha, beheld Ambika, who bore a supremely beautiful, most enchanting form.
ताभ्यां शुम्भाय चाख्याता सातीव सुमनोहरा ।
काप्यास्ते स्त्री महाराज भासयन्ती हिमाचलम् ॥ ५.९०॥
tābhyāṃ śumbhāya cākhyātā sātīva sumanoharā |
kāpyāste strī mahārāja bhāsayantī himācalam || 5.90||
Meaning The two of them described her to Shumbha: 'O great king, some exceedingly lovely woman dwells there, lighting up the Himalaya with her beauty.'
नैव तादृक् क्वचिद्रूपं दृष्टं केनचिदुत्तमम् ।
ज्ञायतां काप्यसौ देवी गृह्यतां चासुरेश्वर ॥ ५.९१॥
naiva tādṛk kvacidrūpaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ kenaciduttamam |
jñāyatāṃ kāpyasau devī gṛhyatāṃ cāsureśvara || 5.91||
Meaning 'Never has such surpassing beauty been seen anywhere by anyone. Find out, O lord of the asuras, who this goddess is, and take possession of her.'
स्त्रीरत्नमतिचार्वङ्गी द्योतयन्ती दिशस्त्विषा ।
सा तु तिष्ठति दैत्येन्द्र तां भवान् द्रष्टुमर्हति ॥ ५.९२॥
strīratnamaticārvaṅgī dyotayantī diśastviṣā |
sā tu tiṣṭhati daityendra tāṃ bhavān draṣṭumarhati || 5.92||
Meaning 'A jewel among women, of exceedingly lovely limbs, illumining the quarters with her radiance, stands there, O lord of demons; your honour ought to behold her.'
यानि रत्नानि मणयो गजाश्वादीनि वै प्रभो ।
त्रैलोक्ये तु समस्तानि साम्प्रतं भान्ति ते गृहे ॥ ५.९३॥
yāni ratnāni maṇayo gajāśvādīni vai prabho |
trailokye tu samastāni sāmprataṃ bhānti te gṛhe || 5.93||
Meaning 'O lord, whatever jewels, gems, elephants, horses and the like exist in all the three worlds, they now all shine in your house.'
ऐरावतः समानीतो गजरत्नं पुरन्दरात् ।
पारिजाततरुश्चायं तथैवोच्चैःश्रवा हयः ॥ ५.९४॥
airāvataḥ samānīto gajaratnaṃ purandarāt |
pārijātataruścāyaṃ tathaivoccaiḥśravā hayaḥ || 5.94||
Meaning 'Airavata, the jewel among elephants, has been brought from Indra (Purandara), and this Parijata tree as well, and likewise the horse Uchchaihshravas.'
विमानं हंससंयुक्तमेतत्तिष्ठति तेऽङ्गणे ।
रत्नभूतमिहानीतं यदासीद्वेधसोऽद्भुतम् ॥ ५.९५॥
vimānaṃ haṃsasaṃyuktametattiṣṭhati te'ṅgaṇe |
ratnabhūtamihānītaṃ yadāsīdvedhaso'dbhutam || 5.95||
Meaning 'This wondrous swan-yoked aerial chariot, a very jewel that once belonged to Brahma (Vedhas), has been brought here and stands in your courtyard.'
निधिरेष महापद्मः समानीतो धनेश्वरात् ।
किञ्जल्किनीं ददौ चाब्धिर्मालामम्लानपङ्कजाम् ॥ ५.९६॥
nidhireṣa mahāpadmaḥ samānīto dhaneśvarāt |
kiñjalkinīṃ dadau cābdhirmālāmamlānapaṅkajām || 5.96||
Meaning 'This treasure named Mahapadma has been brought from Kubera, the lord of wealth; and the ocean gave a garland of unfading lotuses, thick with filaments.'
छत्रं ते वारुणं गेहे काञ्चनस्रावि तिष्ठति ।
तथायं स्यन्दनवरो यः पुरासीत्प्रजापतेः ॥ ५.९७॥
chatraṃ te vāruṇaṃ gehe kāñcanasrāvi tiṣṭhati |
tathāyaṃ syandanavaro yaḥ purāsītprajāpateḥ || 5.97||
Meaning 'Varuna's umbrella, streaming gold, stands in your house; and this excellent chariot too, which formerly belonged to Prajapati.'
मृत्योरुत्क्रान्तिदा नाम शक्तिरीश त्वया हृता ।
पाशः सलिलराजस्य भ्रातुस्तव परिग्रहे ॥ ५.९८॥
mṛtyorutkrāntidā nāma śaktirīśa tvayā hṛtā |
pāśaḥ salilarājasya bhrātustava parigrahe || 5.98||
Meaning 'O lord, the weapon called Utkrantida (bestower of death), belonging to Mrityu (Death), has been carried off by you; and the noose of Varuna, the king of waters, is in your brother's possession.'
निशुम्भस्याब्धिजाताश्च समस्ता रत्नजातयः ।
वह्निरपि ददौ तुभ्यमग्निशौचे च वाससी ॥ ५.९९॥
niśumbhasyābdhijātāśca samastā ratnajātayaḥ |
vahnirapi dadau tubhyamagniśauce ca vāsasī || 5.99||
Meaning 'All the classes of jewels born of the ocean belong to Nishumbha; and Agni too has given you a pair of garments purified by fire (fireproof).'
एवं दैत्येन्द्र रत्नानि समस्तान्याहृतानि ते ।
स्त्रीरत्नमेषा कल्याणी त्वया कस्मान्न गृह्यते ॥ ५.१००॥
evaṃ daityendra ratnāni samastānyāhṛtāni te |
strīratnameṣā kalyāṇī tvayā kasmānna gṛhyate || 5.100||
Meaning 'Thus, O lord of demons, all jewels have been brought to you. Why then is this auspicious jewel among women not taken by you?'
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ५.१०१॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 5.101||
निशम्येति वचः शुम्भः स तदा चण्डमुण्डयोः ।
प्रेषयामास सुग्रीवं दूतं देव्या महासुरम् ॥ ५.१०२॥
niśamyeti vacaḥ śumbhaḥ sa tadā caṇḍamuṇḍayoḥ |
preṣayāmāsa sugrīvaṃ dūtaṃ devyā mahāsuram || 5.102||
Meaning Having heard these words of Chanda and Munda, Shumbha then sent the great asura Sugriva as a messenger to the Goddess.
इति चेति च वक्तव्या सा गत्वा वचनान्मम ।
यथा चाभ्येति सम्प्रीत्या तथा कार्यं त्वया लघु ॥ ५.१०३॥
iti ceti ca vaktavyā sā gatvā vacanānmama |
yathā cābhyeti samprītyā tathā kāryaṃ tvayā laghu || 5.103||
Meaning (Shumbha said,) 'Go and, in my words, say thus and thus to her; and act swiftly so that she comes to me gladly and willingly.'
स तत्र गत्वा यत्रास्ते शैलोद्देशेऽतिशोभने ।
तां च देवीं ततः प्राह श्लक्ष्णं मधुरया गिरा ॥ ५.१०४॥
sa tatra gatvā yatrāste śailoddeśe'tiśobhane |
tāṃ ca devīṃ tataḥ prāha ślakṣṇaṃ madhurayā girā || 5.104||
Meaning He (the messenger), going to that exceedingly lovely spot on the mountain where the Goddess dwelt, then addressed her with smooth and sweet speech —
दूत उवाच ॥ ५.१०५॥

Meaning The messenger said —
देवि दैत्येश्वरः शुम्भस्त्रैलोक्ये परमेश्वरः ।
दूतोऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः ॥ ५.१०६॥
devi daityeśvaraḥ śumbhastrailokye parameśvaraḥ |
dūto'haṃ preṣitastena tvatsakāśamihāgataḥ || 5.106||
Meaning 'O Devi, Shumbha, the lord of demons, is the supreme sovereign of the three worlds. I am a messenger sent by him, and have come here into your presence.'
अव्याहताज्ञः सर्वासु यः सदा देवयोनिषु ।
निर्जिताखिलदैत्यारिः स यदाह शृणुष्व तत् ॥ ५.१०७॥
avyāhatājñaḥ sarvāsu yaḥ sadā devayoniṣu |
nirjitākhiladaityāriḥ sa yadāha śaृṇuṣva tat || 5.107||
Meaning 'He whose command is ever unopposed among all the orders of divine beings, who has vanquished all the enemies of the demons (that is, the gods) — hear now what he says.'
मम त्रैलोक्यमखिलं मम देवा वशानुगाः ।
यज्ञभागानहं सर्वानुपाश्नामि पृथक् पृथक् ॥ ५.१०८॥
mama trailokyamakhilaṃ mama devā vaśānugāḥ |
yajñabhāgānahaṃ sarvānupāśnāmi pṛthak pṛthak || 5.108||
Meaning '(Shumbha declares:) The whole of the three worlds is mine; the gods are subject to my will. I alone enjoy all the shares of the sacrifices, each one separately.'
त्रैलोक्ये वररत्नानि मम वश्यान्यशेषतः ।
तथैव गजरत्नं च हृतं देवेन्द्रवाहनम् ॥ ५.१०९॥
trailokye vararatnāni mama vaśyānyaśeṣataḥ |
tathaiva gajaratnaṃ ca hṛtaṃ devendravāhanam || 5.109||
Meaning 'The choicest jewels in the three worlds are wholly under my sway; likewise the jewel among elephants, the mount of Indra, has been seized by me.'
क्षीरोदमथनोद्भूतमश्वरत्नं ममामरैः ।
उच्चैःश्रवससंज्ञं तत्प्रणिपत्य समर्पितम् ॥ ५.११०॥
kṣīrodamathanodbhūtamaśvaratnaṃ mamāmaraiḥ |
uccaiḥśravasasaṃjñaṃ tatpraṇipatya samarpitam || 5.110||
Meaning 'The jewel among horses named Uchchaihshravas, born of the churning of the milk-ocean, has been offered to me by the gods with humble obeisance.'
यानि चान्यानि देवेषु गन्धर्वेषूरगेषु च ।
रत्नभूतानि भूतानि तानि मय्येव शोभने ॥ ५.१११॥
yāni cānyāni deveṣu gandharveṣūrageṣu ca |
ratnabhūtāni bhūtāni tāni mayyeva śobhane || 5.111||
Meaning 'And whatever other precious, jewel-like beings there are among the gods, gandharvas and serpents — those too, O lovely one, are with me alone.'
स्त्रीरत्नभूतां त्वां देवि लोके मन्यामहे वयम् ।
सा त्वमस्मानुपागच्छ यतो रत्नभुजो वयम् ॥ ५.११२॥
strīratnabhūtāṃ tvāṃ devi loke manyāmahe vayam |
sā tvamasmānupāgaccha yato ratnabhujo vayam || 5.112||
Meaning 'We regard you, O Devi, as the jewel among women in the world. Being such, come to us, for we are the enjoyers of jewels.'
मां वा ममानुजं वापि निशुम्भमुरुविक्रमम् ।
भज त्वं चञ्चलापाङ्गि रत्नभूतासि वै यतः ॥ ५.११३॥
māṃ vā mamānujaṃ vāpi niśumbhamuruvikramam |
bhaja tvaṃ cañcalāpāṅgi ratnabhūtāsi vai yataḥ || 5.113||
Meaning 'O you of tremulous sidelong glances, take either me or my younger brother, the mighty Nishumbha, as your lord, for you are indeed a peerless jewel.'
परमैश्वर्यमतुलं प्राप्स्यसे मत्परिग्रहात् ।
एतद्बुद्ध्या समालोच्य मत्परिग्रहतां व्रज ॥ ५.११४॥
paramaiśvaryamatulaṃ prāpsyase matparigrahāt |
etadbuddhyā samālocya matparigrahatāṃ vraja || 5.114||
Meaning 'By accepting me you will gain matchless, supreme sovereignty. Weigh this well with your intelligence and become my consort.'
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ५.११५॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 5.115||
इत्युक्ता सा तदा देवी गम्भीरान्तःस्मिता जगौ ।
दुर्गा भगवती भद्रा ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ ५.११६॥
ityuktā sā tadā devī gambhīrāntaḥsmitā jagau |
durgā bhagavatī bhadrā yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat || 5.116||
Meaning Thus addressed, the Goddess — Durga, the adorable Bhagavati, the benign Bhadra, by whom this whole world is upheld — then spoke, smiling gravely within herself —
देव्युवाच ॥ ५.११७॥

Meaning The Goddess said —
सत्यमुक्तं त्वया नात्र मिथ्या किञ्चित्त्वयोदितम् ।
त्रैलोक्याधिपतिः शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चापि तादृशः ॥ ५.११८॥
satyamuktaṃ tvayā nātra mithyā kiñcittvayoditam |
trailokyādhipatiḥ śumbho niśumbhaścāpi tādṛśaḥ || 5.118||
Meaning 'You have spoken the truth; nothing you have said is false. Shumbha is indeed lord of the three worlds, and Nishumbha too is such (equally mighty).'
किं त्वत्र यत्प्रतिज्ञातं मिथ्या तत्क्रियते कथम् ।
श्रूयतामल्पबुद्धित्वात्प्रतिज्ञा या कृता पुरा ॥ ५.११९॥
kiṃ tvatra yatpratijñātaṃ mithyā tatkriyate katham |
śrūyatāmalpabuddhitvātpratijñā yā kṛtā purā || 5.119||
Meaning 'But how can the vow that has been taken here be falsified? Hear the vow that I made long ago, out of little wisdom —'
यो मां जयति सङ्ग्रामे यो मे दर्पं व्यपोहति ।
यो मे प्रतिबलो लोके स मे भर्ता भविष्यति ॥ ५.१२०॥
yo māṃ jayati saṅgrāme yo me darpaṃ vyapohati |
yo me pratibalo loke sa me bhartā bhaviṣyati || 5.120||
Meaning 'He who conquers me in battle, who breaks my pride, who is my equal in strength in this world — he alone shall become my husband.'
तदागच्छतु शुम्भोऽत्र निशुम्भो वा महाबलः ।
मां जित्वा किं चिरेणात्र पाणिं गृह्णातु मे लघु ॥ ५.१२१॥
tadāgacchatu śumbho'tra niśumbho vā mahābalaḥ |
māṃ jitvā kiṃ cireṇātra pāṇiṃ gṛhṇātu me laghu || 5.121||
Meaning 'So let Shumbha come here, or the mighty Nishumbha; conquering me — why delay? — let him quickly take my hand in marriage.'
दूत उवाच ॥ ५.१२२॥

Meaning The messenger said —
अवलिप्तासि मैवं त्वं देवि ब्रूहि ममाग्रतः ।
त्रैलोक्ये कः पुमांस्तिष्ठेदग्रे शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥ ५.१२३॥
avaliptāsi maivaṃ tvaṃ devi brūhi mamāgrataḥ |
trailokye kaḥ pumāṃstiṣṭhedagre śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ || 5.123||
Meaning 'You are puffed up with pride, O Devi; do not speak thus before me. In the three worlds, what man could stand before Shumbha and Nishumbha?'
अन्येषामपि दैत्यानां सर्वे देवा न वै युधि ।
तिष्ठन्ति सम्मुखे देवि किं पुनः स्त्री त्वमेकिका ॥ ५.१२४॥
anyeṣāmapi daityānāṃ sarve devā na vai yudhi |
tiṣṭhanti sammukhe devi kiṃ punaḥ strī tvamekikā || 5.124||
Meaning 'Even before the other demons all the gods cannot stand in battle, O Devi; how much less can you, a single woman?'
इन्द्राद्याः सकला देवास्तस्थुर्येषां न संयुगे ।
शुम्भादीनां कथं तेषां स्त्री प्रयास्यसि सम्मुखम् ॥ ५.१२५॥
indrādyāḥ sakalā devāstasthuryeṣāṃ na saṃyuge |
śumbhādīnāṃ kathaṃ teṣāṃ strī prayāsyasi sammukham || 5.125||
Meaning 'Indra and all the gods could not withstand those demons headed by Shumbha in battle — how then will you, a mere woman, go up to face them?'
सा त्वं गच्छ मयैवोक्ता पार्श्वं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ।
केशाकर्षणनिर्धूतगौरवा मा गमिष्यसि ॥ ५.१२६॥
sā tvaṃ gaccha mayaivoktā pārśvaṃ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ |
keśākarṣaṇanirdhūtagauravā mā gamiṣyasi || 5.126||
Meaning 'So, at my bidding, go of your own accord to Shumbha and Nishumbha. Do not go in such a way that you are dragged by the hair and your dignity is stripped away.'

Meaning The Goddess said —
एवमेतद् बली शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चापितादृशः ।
किं करोमि प्रतिज्ञा मे यदनालोचिता पुरा ॥ ५.१२८॥
evametad balī śumbho niśumbhaścāpitādṛśaḥ |
kiṃ karomi pratijñā me yadanālocitā purā || 5.128||
Meaning 'It is so — Shumbha is mighty, and Nishumbha too is such. But what can I do? My vow was rashly made before, without due reflection.'
स त्वं गच्छ मयोक्तं ते यदेतत्सर्वमादृतः ।
तदाचक्ष्वासुरेन्द्राय स च युक्तं करोतु यत् ॥ ५.१२९॥
sa tvaṃ gaccha mayoktaṃ te yadetatsarvamādṛtaḥ |
tadācakṣvāsurendrāya sa ca yuktaṃ karotu yat || 5.129||
Meaning 'So go; report respectfully to the lord of demons all that I have told you, and let him do whatever he deems fitting.'
