ॐ ध्यायेयं रत्नपीठे शुककलपठितं शृण्वतीं श्यामलाङ्गीं
न्यस्तैकांघ्रिं सरोजे शशिशकलधरां वल्लकीं वादयन्तीम् ।
कल्हाराबद्धमालां नियमितविलसच्चोलिकां रत्नवस्त्रां
मातङ्गी शङ्कपात्रां मधुरमधुमदां चित्रकोद्भासिभालाम् ॥

oṃ dhyāyeyaṃ ratnapīṭhe śukakalapaṭhitaṃ śaृṇvatīṃ śyāmalāṅgīṃ
nyastaikāṃghriṃ saroje śaśiśakaladharāṃ vallakīṃ vādayantīm |
kalhārābaddhamālāṃ niyamitavilasaccolikāṃ ratnavastrāṃ
mātaṅgī śaṅkapātrāṃ madhuramadhumadāṃ citrakodbhāsibhālām ||
Meaning Dhyāna (meditation verse) — a contemplation of the dark-hued Goddess (in Her Mātaṅgī aspect): I meditate upon Her of dark limbs, seated upon a jewelled throne, listening to the sweet words recited by Her parrot; one foot placed upon a lotus, bearing the crescent moon and playing the vīṇā; garlanded with kalhāra (white water-lily) blossoms, wearing a close-fitting bodice and jewel-studded garments, holding a conch-shaped vessel, flushed with sweet mead, Her forehead resplendent with an ornamental mark.
ॐ ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ७.१॥
oṃ ṛṣiruvāca || 7.1||
Meaning Om. The sage (Ṛṣi) said:
आज्ञप्तास्ते ततो दैत्याश्चण्डमुण्डपुरोगमाः ।
चतुरङ्गबलोपेता ययुरभ्युद्यतायुधाः ॥ ७.२॥
ājñaptāste tato daityāścaṇḍamuṇḍapurogamāḥ |
caturaṅgabalopetā yayurabhyudyatāyudhāḥ || 7.2||
Meaning Then, having been commanded (by Śumbha), those Daityas, led by Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, equipped with the fourfold army and with weapons raised aloft, set forth.
ददृशुस्ते ततो देवीमीषद्धासां व्यवस्थिताम् ।
सिंहस्योपरि शैलेन्द्रशृङ्गे महति काञ्चने ॥ ७.३॥
dadṛśuste tato devīmīṣaddhāsāṃ vyavasthitām |
siṃhasyopari śailendraśaृṅge mahati kāñcane || 7.3||
Meaning Then they beheld the Goddess, faintly smiling, stationed upon Her lion atop a great golden peak of the lord of mountains (Himālaya).
ते दृष्ट्वा तां समादातुमुद्यमं चक्रुरुद्यताः ।
आकृष्टचापासिधरास्तथान्ये तत्समीपगाः ॥ ७.४॥
te dṛṣṭvā tāṃ samādātumudyamaṃ cakrurudyatāḥ |
ākṛṣṭacāpāsidharāstathānye tatsamīpagāḥ || 7.4||
Meaning Beholding Her, those eager (demons) made an effort to seize Her; some, with bows drawn and swords in hand, and others drawing close beside Her.
ततः कोपं चकारोच्चैरम्बिका तानरीन्प्रति ।
कोपेन चास्या वदनं मषीवर्णमभूत्तदा ॥ ७.५॥
tataḥ kopaṃ cakāroccairambikā tānarīnprati |
kopena cāsyā vadanaṃ maṣīvarṇamabhūttadā || 7.5||
Meaning Then Ambikā grew intensely angry at those foes, and in Her wrath Her face at that moment turned black as ink.
भ्रुकुटीकुटिलात्तस्या ललाटफलकाद्द्रुतम् ।
काली करालवदना विनिष्क्रान्तासिपाशिनी ॥ ७.६॥
bhrukuṭīkuṭilāttasyā lalāṭaphalakāddrutam |
kālī karālavadanā viniṣkrāntāsipāśinī || 7.6||
Meaning From Her forehead, contracted with a frown, there swiftly sprang forth Kālī of terrible countenance, bearing sword and noose.
विचित्रखट्वाङ्गधरा नरमालाविभूषणा ।
द्वीपिचर्मपरीधाना शुष्कमांसातिभैरवा ॥ ७.७॥
vicitrakhaṭvāṅgadharā naramālāvibhūṣaṇā |
dvīpicarmaparīdhānā śuṣkamāṃsātibhairavā || 7.7||
Meaning She bore a strange khaṭvāṅga (a skull-topped staff), was adorned with a garland of human heads, clad in a tiger's skin, and — with Her withered, gaunt flesh — was utterly terrifying to look upon.
अतिविस्तारवदना जिह्वाललनभीषणा ।
निमग्नारक्तनयना नादापूरितदिङ्मुखा ॥ ७.८॥
ativistāravadanā jihvālalanabhīṣaṇā |
nimagnāraktanayanā nādāpūritadiṅmukhā || 7.8||
Meaning Her mouth was gaping wide, made dreadful by Her lolling tongue; Her eyes were sunken and red, and She filled all the quarters with Her roar.
सा वेगेनाभिपतिता घातयन्ती महासुरान् ।
सैन्ये तत्र सुरारीणामभक्षयत तद्बलम् ॥ ७.९॥
sā vegenābhipatitā ghātayantī mahāsurān |
sainye tatra surārīṇāmabhakṣayata tadbalam || 7.9||
Meaning She swooped down with great speed and, slaying the mighty asuras, devoured that host of the enemies of the gods there in the army.
पार्ष्णिग्राहाङ्कुशग्राहयोधघण्टासमन्वितान् ।
समादायैकहस्तेन मुखे चिक्षेप वारणान् ॥ ७.१०॥
pārṣṇigrāhāṅkuśagrāhayodhaghaṇṭāsamanvitān |
samādāyaikahastena mukhe cikṣepa vāraṇān || 7.10||
Meaning Seizing in a single hand the elephants — together with their rear-guards, their goad-bearing drivers, the warriors upon them, and their bells — She flung them into Her mouth.
तथैव योधं तुरगै रथं सारथिना सह ।
निक्षिप्य वक्त्रे दशनैश्चर्वयन्त्यतिभैरवम् ॥ ७.११॥
tathaiva yodhaṃ turagai rathaṃ sārathinā saha |
nikṣipya vaktre daśanaiścarvayantyatibhairavam || 7.11||
Meaning In the same way, casting into Her mouth the warrior along with his horses, and the chariot together with its charioteer, She ground them most fearsomely between Her teeth.
एकं जग्राह केशेषु ग्रीवायामथ चापरम् ।
पादेनाक्रम्य चैवान्यमुरसान्यमपोथयत् ॥ ७.१२॥
ekaṃ jagrāha keśeṣu grīvāyāmatha cāparam |
pādenākramya caivānyamurasānyamapothayat || 7.12||
Meaning One She seized by the hair, another by the neck; one She crushed by treading with Her foot, and another She smashed against Her breast.
तैर्मुक्तानि च शस्त्राणि महास्त्राणि तथासुरैः ।
मुखेन जग्राह रुषा दशनैर्मथितान्यपि ॥ ७.१३॥
tairmuktāni ca śastrāṇi mahāstrāṇi tathāsuraiḥ |
mukhena jagrāha ruṣā daśanairmathitānyapi || 7.13||
Meaning The weapons and mighty missiles hurled by those asuras She caught in Her mouth in fury and crushed to powder with Her teeth.
बलिनां तद्बलं सर्वमसुराणां दुरात्मनाम् ।
ममर्दाभक्षयच्चान्यानन्यांश्चाताडयत्तदा ॥ ७.१४॥
balināṃ tadbalaṃ sarvamasurāṇāṃ durātmanām |
mamardābhakṣayaccānyānanyāṃścātāḍayattadā || 7.14||
Meaning That entire army of those mighty, evil-souled asuras She trampled down — devouring some and striking down others.
असिना निहताः केचित्केचित्खट्वाङ्गताडिताः ।
जग्मुर्विनाशमसुरा दन्ताग्राभिहतास्तथा ॥ ७.१५॥
asinā nihatāḥ kecitkecitkhaṭvāṅgatāḍitāḥ |
jagmurvināśamasurā dantāgrābhihatāstathā || 7.15||
Meaning Some asuras, slain by the sword, some struck by the khaṭvāṅga, and others likewise smitten by the points of Her teeth, met their destruction.
क्षणेन तद्बलं सर्वमसुराणां निपातितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा चण्डोऽभिदुद्राव तां कालीमतिभीषणाम् ॥ ७.१६॥
kṣaṇena tadbalaṃ sarvamasurāṇāṃ nipātitam |
dṛṣṭvā caṇḍo'bhidudrāva tāṃ kālīmatibhīṣaṇām || 7.16||
Meaning In but a moment that whole army of asuras was struck down. Seeing this, Caṇḍa rushed upon that most terrible Kālī.
शरवर्षैर्महाभीमैर्भीमाक्षीं तां महासुरः ।
छादयामास चक्रैश्च मुण्डः क्षिप्तैः सहस्रशः ॥ ७.१७॥
śaravarṣairmahābhīmairbhīmākṣīṃ tāṃ mahāsuraḥ |
chādayāmāsa cakraiśca muṇḍaḥ kṣiptaiḥ sahasraśaḥ || 7.17||
Meaning The great asura Caṇḍa, with showers of most fearful arrows, and Muṇḍa, with discuses flung by the thousand, overwhelmed that fierce-eyed Goddess (Kālī).
तानि चक्राण्यनेकानि विशमानानि तन्मुखम् ।
बभुर्यथार्कबिम्बानि सुबहूनि घनोदरम् ॥ ७.१८॥
tāni cakrāṇyanekāni viśamānāni tanmukham |
babhuryathārkabimbāni subahūni ghanodaram || 7.18||
Meaning Those many discuses, entering Her mouth, shone like a great multitude of solar orbs disappearing into the belly of a cloud.
ततो जहासातिरुषा भीमं भैरवनादिनी ।
काली करालवदना दुर्दर्शदशनोज्ज्वला ॥ ७.१९॥
tato jahāsātiruṣā bhīmaṃ bhairavanādinī |
kālī karālavadanā durdarśadaśanojjvalā || 7.19||
Meaning Then Kālī of terrible face, uttering dreadful roars and gleaming with teeth hard to look upon, laughed frightfully in exceeding wrath.
उत्थाय च महासिंहं देवी चण्डमधावत ।
गृहीत्वा चास्य केशेषु शिरस्तेनासिनाच्छिनत् ॥ ७.२०॥
utthāya ca mahāsiṃhaṃ devī caṇḍamadhāvata |
gṛhītvā cāsya keśeṣu śirastenāsinācchinat || 7.20||
Meaning And the Goddess, mounting Her great lion, dashed at Caṇḍa, and seizing him by the hair, severed his head with that sword.
अथ मुण्डोऽभ्यधावत्तां दृष्ट्वा चण्डं निपातितम् ।
तमप्यपातयद्भूमौ सा खड्गाभिहतं रुषा ॥ ७.२१॥
atha muṇḍo'bhyadhāvattāṃ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṃ nipātitam |
tamapyapātayadbhūmau sā khaḍgābhihataṃ ruṣā || 7.21||
Meaning Then, seeing Caṇḍa struck down, Muṇḍa rushed at Her; him too She felled to the ground, smitten by Her sword in fury.
हतशेषं ततः सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा चण्डं निपातितम् ।
मुण्डं च सुमहावीर्यं दिशो भेजे भयातुरम् ॥ ७.२२॥
hataśeṣaṃ tataḥ sainyaṃ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṃ nipātitam |
muṇḍaṃ ca sumahāvīryaṃ diśo bheje bhayāturam || 7.22||
Meaning Thereupon, seeing Caṇḍa slain and the exceedingly valiant Muṇḍa (fallen) as well, the surviving remnant of the army, stricken with terror, fled in all directions.
शिरश्चण्डस्य काली च गृहीत्वा मुण्डमेव च ।
प्राह प्रचण्डाट्टहासमिश्रमभ्येत्य चण्डिकाम् ॥ ७.२३॥
śiraścaṇḍasya kālī ca gṛhītvā muṇḍameva ca |
prāha pracaṇḍāṭṭahāsamiśramabhyetya caṇḍikām || 7.23||
Meaning Then Kālī, taking up the head of Caṇḍa and likewise of Muṇḍa, approaching Caṇḍikā, spoke — Her words mingled with fierce loud laughter:
मया तवात्रोपहृतौ चण्डमुण्डौ महापशू ।
युद्धयज्ञे स्वयं शुम्भं निशुम्भं च हनिष्यसि ॥ ७.२४॥
mayā tavātropahṛtau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāpaśū |
yuddhayajñe svayaṃ śumbhaṃ niśumbhaṃ ca haniṣyasi || 7.24||
Meaning "Here in this sacrifice of battle I have brought to you Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, these two great beasts (as offerings); Śumbha and Niśumbha you shall yourself slay."
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ७.२५॥

Meaning The sage (Ṛṣi) said:
तावानीतौ ततो दृष्ट्वा चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ ।
उवाच कालीं कल्याणी ललितं चण्डिका वचः ॥ ७.२६॥
tāvānītau tato dṛṣṭvā caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau |
uvāca kālīṃ kalyāṇī lalitaṃ caṇḍikā vacaḥ || 7.26||
Meaning Then, beholding those two great asuras Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa brought before Her, the auspicious Caṇḍikā spoke these graceful words to Kālī:
यस्माच्चण्डं च मुण्डं च गृहीत्वा त्वमुपागता ।
चामुण्डेति ततो लोके ख्याता देवी भविष्यसि ॥ ७.२७॥
yasmāccaṇḍaṃ ca muṇḍaṃ ca gṛhītvā tvamupāgatā |
cāmuṇḍeti tato loke khyātā devī bhaviṣyasi || 7.27||
Meaning "Since you have come having captured both Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, therefore, O Goddess, you shall be renowned in the world by the name Cāmuṇḍā."
