ॐ उद्यद्भानुसहस्रकान्तिमरुणक्षौमां शिरोमालिकां
रक्तालिप्तपयोधरां जपवटीं विद्यामभीतिं वरम् ।
हस्ताब्जैर्दधतीं त्रिनेत्रविलसद्वक्त्रारविन्दश्रियं
देवीं बद्धहिमांशुरत्नमुकुटां वन्देऽरविन्दस्थिताम् ।

oṃ udyadbhānusahasrakāntimaruṇakṣaumāṃ śiromālikāṃ
raktāliptapayodharāṃ japavaṭīṃ vidyāmabhītiṃ varam |
hastābjairdadhatīṃ trinetravilasadvaktrāravindaśriyaṃ
devīṃ baddhahimāṃśuratnamukuṭāṃ vande'ravindasthitām |
oṃ ṛṣiruvāca || 3.1||
Meaning Meditation verse (dhyāna) on the Goddess: I bow to the Devī seated upon a lotus, radiant like a thousand rising suns, clad in red silk, wearing a garland of heads, her breasts anointed red, holding in her lotus-hands a rosary, the book of knowledge (vidyā), and the gestures of fearlessness (abhaya) and boon-granting (vara); three-eyed, her lotus face resplendent, crowned with a diadem set with the moon-jewel. (Om. The sage said —)
निहन्यमानं तत्सैन्यमवलोक्य महासुरः ।
सेनानीश्चिक्षुरः कोपाद्ययौ योद्धुमथाम्बिकाम् ॥ ३.२॥
nihanyamānaṃ tatsainyamavalokya mahāsuraḥ |
senānīścikṣuraḥ kopādyayau yoddhumathāmbikām || 3.2||
Meaning Seeing that army being cut down, the great asura, the commander Cikṣura, advanced in fury to fight Ambikā.
स देवीं शरवर्षेण ववर्ष समरेऽसुरः ।
यथा मेरुगिरेः शृङ्गं तोयवर्षेण तोयदः ॥ ३.३॥
sa devīṃ śaravarṣeṇa vavarṣa samare'suraḥ |
yathā merugireḥ śaृṅgaṃ toyavarṣeṇa toyadaḥ || 3.3||
Meaning That asura rained a shower of arrows upon the Devī in battle, as a cloud pours rain upon the peak of Mount Meru.
तस्य छित्वा ततो देवी लीलयैव शरोत्करान् ।
जघान तुरगान्बाणैर्यन्तारं चैव वाजिनाम् ॥ ३.४॥
tasya chitvā tato devī līlayaiva śarotkarān |
jaghāna turagānbāṇairyantāraṃ caiva vājinām || 3.4||
Meaning Then the Devī, effortlessly (as if in play) cutting apart his volleys of arrows, slew his horses and the driver of the horses with her arrows.
चिच्छेद च धनुः सद्यो ध्वजं चातिसमुच्छृतम् ।
विव्याध चैव गात्रेषु छिन्नधन्वानमाशुगैः ॥ ३.५॥
ciccheda ca dhanuḥ sadyo dhvajaṃ cātisamucchṛtam |
vivyādha caiva gātreṣu chinnadhanvānamāśugaiḥ || 3.5||
Meaning She at once shattered his bow and his towering banner, and pierced the limbs of the bowless asura with swift arrows.
सच्छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः ।
अभ्यधावत तां देवीं खड्गचर्मधरोऽसुरः ॥ ३.६॥
sacchinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ |
abhyadhāvata tāṃ devīṃ khaḍgacarmadharo'suraḥ || 3.6||
Meaning His bow cut, chariotless, his horses and charioteer slain, the asura, taking up sword and shield, rushed at the Devī.
सिंहमाहत्य खड्गेन तीक्ष्णधारेण मूर्धनि ।
आजघान भुजे सव्ये देवीमप्यतिवेगवान् ॥ ३.७॥
siṃhamāhatya khaḍgena tīkṣṇadhāreṇa mūrdhani |
ājaghāna bhuje savye devīmapyativegavān || 3.7||
Meaning With great speed he struck the lion on the head with his sharp-edged sword, and struck the Devī too upon her left arm.
तस्याः खड्गो भुजं प्राप्य पफाल नृपनन्दन ।
ततो जग्राह शूलं स कोपादरुणलोचनः ॥ ३.८॥
tasyāḥ khaḍgo bhujaṃ prāpya paphāla nṛpanandana |
tato jagrāha śūlaṃ sa kopādaruṇalocanaḥ || 3.8||
Meaning O prince, on reaching her arm his sword shattered. Then, his eyes red with rage, he seized a trident (śūla).
चिक्षेप च ततस्तत्तु भद्रकाल्यां महासुरः ।
जाज्वल्यमानं तेजोभी रविबिम्बमिवाम्बरात् ॥ ३.९॥
cikṣepa ca tatastattu bhadrakālyāṃ mahāsuraḥ |
jājvalyamānaṃ tejobhī ravibimbamivāmbarāt || 3.9||
Meaning Then the great asura hurled at Bhadrakālī that trident, blazing with radiance, like the very disc of the sun (falling) from the sky.
दृष्ट्वा तदापतच्छूलं देवी शूलममुञ्चत ।
तेन तच्छतधा नीतं शूलं स च महासुरः ॥ ३.१०॥
dṛṣṭvā tadāpatacchūlaṃ devī śūlamamuñcata |
tena tacchatadhā nītaṃ śūlaṃ sa ca mahāsuraḥ || 3.10||
Meaning Seeing that spear hurtling down, the Devī loosed her own trident; by it both that spear and the great asura were reduced to a hundred pieces.
हते तस्मिन्महावीर्ये महिषस्य चमूपतौ ।
आजगाम गजारूढश्चामरस्त्रिदशार्दनः ॥ ३.११॥
hate tasminmahāvīrye mahiṣasya camūpatau |
ājagāma gajārūḍhaścāmarastridaśārdanaḥ || 3.11||
Meaning When that mighty commander of Mahiṣa (Cikṣura) had been slain, Cāmara, the tormentor of the gods, came mounted upon an elephant.
सोऽपि शक्तिं मुमोचाथ देव्यास्तामम्बिका द्रुतम् ।
हुङ्काराभिहतां भूमौ पातयामास निष्प्रभाम् ॥ ३.१२॥
so'pi śaktiṃ mumocātha devyāstāmambikā drutam |
huṅkārābhihatāṃ bhūmau pātayāmāsa niṣprabhām || 3.12||
Meaning He too then hurled a Śakti (dart) at the Devī; but Ambikā, striking it with a mere 'Huṃ', cast it to the earth robbed of its splendor.
भग्नां शक्तिं निपतितां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधसमन्वितः ।
चिक्षेप चामरः शूलं बाणैस्तदपि साच्छिनत् ॥ ३.१३॥
bhagnāṃ śaktiṃ nipatitāṃ dṛṣṭvā krodhasamanvitaḥ |
cikṣepa cāmaraḥ śūlaṃ bāṇaistadapi sācchinat || 3.13||
Meaning Seeing his Śakti broken and fallen, Cāmara, filled with wrath, hurled a spear; that too she cut apart with arrows.
ततः सिंहः समुत्पत्य गजकुम्भान्तरे स्थितः ।
बाहुयुद्धेन युयुधे तेनोच्चैस्त्रिदशारिणा ॥ ३.१४॥
tataḥ siṃhaḥ samutpatya gajakumbhāntare sthitaḥ |
bāhuyuddhena yuyudhe tenoccaistridaśāriṇā || 3.14||
Meaning Then the lion, springing up, stationed itself upon the elephant's frontal lobes and fought hand-to-hand with that lofty foe of the gods (Cāmara).
युध्यमानौ ततस्तौ तु तस्मान्नागान्महीं गतौ ।
युयुधातेऽतिसंरब्धौ प्रहारैरतिदारुणैः ॥ ३.१५॥
yudhyamānau tatastau tu tasmānnāgānmahīṃ gatau |
yuyudhāte'tisaṃrabdhau prahārairatidāruṇaiḥ || 3.15||
Meaning Fighting, the two came down from that elephant to the earth, and, greatly enraged, battled with fearsome blows.
ततो वेगात् खमुत्पत्य निपत्य च मृगारिणा ।
करप्रहारेण शिरश्चामरस्य पृथक् कृतम् ॥ ३.१६॥
tato vegāt khamutpatya nipatya ca mṛgāriṇā |
karaprahāreṇa śiraścāmarasya pṛthak kṛtam || 3.16||
Meaning Then the lion, springing swiftly into the sky and pouncing down, with a blow of its paw severed Cāmara's head from his body.
उदग्रश्च रणे देव्या शिलावृक्षादिभिर्हतः ।
दन्तमुष्टितलैश्चैव करालश्च निपातितः ॥ ३.१७॥
udagraśca raṇe devyā śilāvṛkṣādibhirhataḥ |
dantamuṣṭitalaiścaiva karālaśca nipātitaḥ || 3.17||
Meaning Udagra too was slain in battle by the Devī with rocks, trees and the like, and Karāla was struck down with teeth, fists and palm-blows.
देवी क्रुद्धा गदापातैश्चूर्णयामास चोद्धतम् ।
बाष्कलं भिन्दिपालेन बाणैस्ताम्रं तथान्धकम् ॥ ३.१८॥
devī kruddhā gadāpātaiścūrṇayāmāsa coddhatam |
bāṣkalaṃ bhindipālena bāṇaistāmraṃ tathāndhakam || 3.18||
Meaning The enraged Devī pulverized Uddhata with blows of her mace, Bāṣkala with a bhindipāla (dart), and Tāmra and Andhaka with arrows.
उग्रास्यमुग्रवीर्यं च तथैव च महाहनुम् ।
त्रिनेत्रा च त्रिशूलेन जघान परमेश्वरी ॥ ३.१९॥
ugrāsyamugravīryaṃ ca tathaiva ca mahāhanum |
trinetrā ca triśūlena jaghāna parameśvarī || 3.19||
Meaning The three-eyed Supreme Goddess (Parameśvarī) slew Ugrāsya, Ugravīrya, and Mahāhanu with her trident.
बिडालस्यासिना कायात् पातयामास वै शिरः ।
दुर्धरं दुर्मुखं चोभौ शरैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम् ॥ ३.२०॥
biḍālasyāsinā kāyāt pātayāmāsa vai śiraḥ |
durdharaṃ durmukhaṃ cobhau śarairninye yamakṣayam || 3.20||
Meaning With her sword she felled Biḍāla's head from his body, and dispatched both Durdhara and Durmukha to Yama's realm with her arrows.
एवं सङ्क्षीयमाणे तु स्वसैन्ये महिषासुरः ।
माहिषेण स्वरूपेण त्रासयामास तान् गणान् ॥ ३.२१॥
evaṃ saṅkṣīyamāṇe tu svasainye mahiṣāsuraḥ |
māhiṣeṇa svarūpeṇa trāsayāmāsa tān gaṇān || 3.21||
Meaning As his army was thus being destroyed, Mahiṣāsura, in his own buffalo form, terrified those hosts (of the Devī).
कांश्चित्तुण्डप्रहारेण खुरक्षेपैस्तथापरान् ।
लाङ्गूलताडितांश्चान्यान् शृङ्गाभ्यां च विदारितान् ॥ ३.२२॥
kāṃścittuṇḍaprahāreṇa khurakṣepaistathāparān |
lāṅgūlatāḍitāṃścānyān śaृṅgābhyāṃ ca vidāritān || 3.22||
Meaning Some he struck with a blow of his snout, others with kicks of his hooves, others he lashed with his tail, and others he tore apart with his two horns.
वेगेन कांश्चिदपरान्नादेन भ्रमणेन च ।
निःश्वासपवनेनान्यान्पातयामास भूतले ॥ ३.२३॥
vegena kāṃścidaparānnādena bhramaṇena ca |
niḥśvāsapavanenānyānpātayāmāsa bhūtale || 3.23||
Meaning Some by his rush, others by his bellowing and his whirling, and yet others by the wind of his breath he cast down upon the ground.
निपात्य प्रमथानीकमभ्यधावत सोऽसुरः ।
सिंहं हन्तुं महादेव्याः कोपं चक्रे ततोऽम्बिका ॥ ३.२४॥
nipātya pramathānīkamabhyadhāvata so'suraḥ |
siṃhaṃ hantuṃ mahādevyāḥ kopaṃ cakre tato'mbikā || 3.24||
Meaning Having felled the army of the Pramatha hosts, that asura rushed to slay the lion of the Great Devī; thereupon Ambikā grew wrathful.
सोऽपि कोपान्महावीर्यः खुरक्षुण्णमहीतलः ।
शृङ्गाभ्यां पर्वतानुच्चांश्चिक्षेप च ननाद च ॥ ३.२५॥
so'pi kopānmahāvīryaḥ khurakṣuṇṇamahītalaḥ |
śaृṅgābhyāṃ parvatānuccāṃścikṣepa ca nanāda ca || 3.25||
Meaning He too, of great might, in his fury, gouging the earth's surface with his hooves, hurled lofty mountains with his horns and roared.
वेगभ्रमणविक्षुण्णा मही तस्य व्यशीर्यत ।
लाङ्गूलेनाहतश्चाब्धिः प्लावयामास सर्वतः ॥ ३.२६॥
vegabhramaṇavikṣuṇṇā mahī tasya vyaśīryata |
lāṅgūlenāhataścābdhiḥ plāvayāmāsa sarvataḥ || 3.26||
Meaning The earth, crushed by his violent whirling, split apart; and the ocean, lashed by his tail, overflowed on every side.
धुतशृङ्गविभिन्नाश्च खण्डं खण्डं ययुर्घनाः ।
श्वासानिलास्ताः शतशो निपेतुर्नभसोऽचलाः ॥ ३.२७॥
dhutaśaृṅgavibhinnāśca khaṇḍaṃ khaṇḍaṃ yayurghanāḥ |
śvāsānilāstāḥ śataśo nipeturnabhaso'calāḥ || 3.27||
Meaning Struck and split by his tossing horns, the clouds broke into fragments; and, buffeted by the winds of his breath, the mountains fell by the hundreds from the sky.
इति क्रोधसमाध्मातमापतन्तं महासुरम् ।
दृष्ट्वा सा चण्डिका कोपं तद्वधाय तदाकरोत् ॥ ३.२८॥
iti krodhasamādhmātamāpatantaṃ mahāsuram |
dṛṣṭvā sā caṇḍikā kopaṃ tadvadhāya tadākarot || 3.28||
Meaning Seeing the great asura thus swollen with rage and charging upon her, Caṇḍikā roused her wrath for his slaying.
सा क्षिप्त्वा तस्य वै पाशं तं बबन्ध महासुरम् ।
तत्याज माहिषं रूपं सोऽपि बद्धो महामृधे ॥ ३.२९॥
sā kṣiptvā tasya vai pāśaṃ taṃ babandha mahāsuram |
tatyāja māhiṣaṃ rūpaṃ so'pi baddho mahāmṛdhe || 3.29||
Meaning Casting her noose, she bound that great asura; and once bound in the great battle, he abandoned his buffalo form.
ततः सिंहोऽभवत्सद्यो यावत्तस्याम्बिका शिरः ।
छिनत्ति तावत् पुरुषः खड्गपाणिरदृश्यत ॥ ३.३०॥
tataḥ siṃho'bhavatsadyo yāvattasyāmbikā śiraḥ |
chinatti tāvat puruṣaḥ khaḍgapāṇiradṛśyata || 3.30||
Meaning Then he at once became a lion; and just as Ambikā was severing its head, he appeared as a man with sword in hand.
तत एवाशु पुरुषं देवी चिच्छेद सायकैः ।
तं खड्गचर्मणा सार्धं ततः सोऽभून्महागजः ॥ ३.३१॥
tata evāśu puruṣaṃ devī ciccheda sāyakaiḥ |
taṃ khaḍgacarmaṇā sārdhaṃ tataḥ so'bhūnmahāgajaḥ || 3.31||
Meaning At once the Devī cut down that man, together with his sword and shield, with her arrows; then he became a huge elephant.
करेण च महासिंहं तं चकर्ष जगर्ज च ।
कर्षतस्तु करं देवी खड्गेन निरकृन्तत ॥ ३.३२॥
kareṇa ca mahāsiṃhaṃ taṃ cakarṣa jagarja ca |
karṣatastu karaṃ devī khaḍgena nirakṛntata || 3.32||
Meaning With his trunk he dragged that great lion and roared; but as he dragged, the Devī cut off his trunk with her sword.
ततो महासुरो भूयो माहिषं वपुरास्थितः ।
तथैव क्षोभयामास त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥ ३.३३॥
tato mahāsuro bhūyo māhiṣaṃ vapurāsthitaḥ |
tathaiva kṣobhayāmāsa trailokyaṃ sacarācaram || 3.33||
Meaning Then the great asura, again assuming the buffalo body, once more shook the three worlds with all their moving and unmoving beings, just as before.
ततः क्रुद्धा जगन्माता चण्डिका पानमुत्तमम् ।
पपौ पुनः पुनश्चैव जहासारुणलोचना ॥ ३.३४॥
tataḥ kruddhā jaganmātā caṇḍikā pānamuttamam |
papau punaḥ punaścaiva jahāsāruṇalocanā || 3.34||
Meaning Then the enraged Mother of the world, Caṇḍikā, drank the choice draught (of wine) again and again, and, her eyes red, laughed aloud.
ननर्द चासुरः सोऽपि बलवीर्यमदोद्धतः ।
विषाणाभ्यां च चिक्षेप चण्डिकां प्रति भूधरान् ॥ ३.३५॥
nanarda cāsuraḥ so'pi balavīryamadoddhataḥ |
viṣāṇābhyāṃ ca cikṣepa caṇḍikāṃ prati bhūdharān || 3.35||
Meaning That asura too, insolent with the intoxication of his strength and valor, roared, and with his two horns hurled mountains at Caṇḍikā.
सा च तान्प्रहितांस्तेन चूर्णयन्ती शरोत्करैः ।
उवाच तं मदोद्धूतमुखरागाकुलाक्षरम् ॥ ३.३६॥
sā ca tānprahitāṃstena cūrṇayantī śarotkaraiḥ |
uvāca taṃ madoddhūtamukharāgākulākṣaram || 3.36||
Meaning And she, crushing with her volleys of arrows the mountains he had hurled, spoke to him — her words unsteady, from the flush that the wine had raised upon her face —
देव्युवाच ॥ ३.३७॥
devyuvāca || 3.37||
गर्ज गर्ज क्षणं मूढ मधु यावत्पिबाम्यहम् ।
मया त्वयि हतेऽत्रैव गर्जिष्यन्त्याशु देवताः ॥ ३.३८॥
garja garja kṣaṇaṃ mūḍha madhu yāvatpibāmyaham |
mayā tvayi hate'traiva garjiṣyantyāśu devatāḥ || 3.38||
Meaning Roar, roar for a moment, O fool, while I drink this wine (madhu). When you are slain by me here and now, the gods themselves shall soon roar (in triumph).
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ३.३९॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 3.39||
एवमुक्त्वा समुत्पत्य सारूढा तं महासुरम् ।
पादेनाक्रम्य कण्ठे च शूलेनैनमताडयत् ॥ ३.४०॥
evamuktvā samutpatya sārūḍhā taṃ mahāsuram |
pādenākramya kaṇṭhe ca śūlenainamatāḍayat || 3.40||
Meaning Having spoken thus, she sprang up and mounted that great asura, and, pressing his neck with her foot, struck him with her trident.
ततः सोऽपि पदाक्रान्तस्तया निजमुखात्तदा ।
अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासीद्देव्या वीर्येण संवृतः ॥ ३.४१॥
tataḥ so'pi padākrāntastayā nijamukhāttadā |
ardhaniṣkrānta evāsīddevyā vīryeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ || 3.41||
Meaning Then, pinned beneath her foot, he had emerged only halfway from his own (buffalo's) mouth when he was hemmed in by the Devī's might.
अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासौ युध्यमानो महासुरः ।
तया महासिना देव्या शिरश्छित्त्वा निपातितः ॥ ३.४२॥
ardhaniṣkrānta evāsau yudhyamāno mahāsuraḥ |
tayā mahāsinā devyā śiraśchittvā nipātitaḥ || 3.42||
Meaning Still only half-emerged and fighting, that great asura was felled by the Devī, who struck off his head with her great sword.
ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं दैत्यसैन्यं ननाश तत् ।
प्रहर्षं च परं जग्मुः सकला देवतागणाः ॥ ३.४३॥
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvaṃ daityasainyaṃ nanāśa tat |
praharṣaṃ ca paraṃ jagmuḥ sakalā devatāgaṇāḥ || 3.43||
Meaning Then that entire demon army, crying out in dismay, perished, and all the hosts of gods attained supreme joy.
तुष्टुवुस्तां सुरा देवीं सहदिव्यैर्महर्षिभिः ।
जगुर्गन्धर्वपतयो ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ॥ ३.४४॥
tuṣṭuvustāṃ surā devīṃ sahadivyairmaharṣibhiḥ |
jagurgandharvapatayo nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ || 3.44||
Meaning The gods, together with the divine great sages, hymned that Devī; the lords of the Gandharvas sang, and the throngs of Apsaras danced.
