अस्य श्री मध्यमचरित्रस्य विष्णुरृषिः ।
श्रीमहालक्ष्मीर्देवता ।
उष्णिक् छन्दः । शाकम्भरी शक्तिः । दुर्गा बीजम् ।
वायुस्तत्त्वम् ।
यजुर्वेदः स्वरूपम् । श्रीमहालक्ष्मीप्रीत्यर्थे
मध्यमचरित्रजपे विनियोगः ।
Meaning Viniyoga (ritual application) of this Madhyama Charitra, the middle episode: its seer (rishi) is Vishnu; its deity is Shri Mahalakshmi; its metre is Ushnik; its power (shakti) is Shakambhari; its seed (bija) is Durga; its element (tattva) is Vayu (air); its essence is the Yajurveda. It is employed in the recitation of the Madhyama Charitra for the pleasure of Shri Mahalakshmi.
। ध्यानम् ।
ॐ अक्षस्रक्परशू गदेषुकुलिशं पद्मं धनुः कुण्डिकां
दण्डं शक्तिमसिं च चर्म जलजं घण्टां सुराभाजनम् ।
शूलं पाशसुदर्शने च दधतीं हस्तैः प्रवालप्रभां
सेवे सैरिभमर्दिनीमिह महालक्ष्मीं सरोजस्थिताम् ॥

oṃ akṣasrakparaśū gadeṣukuliśaṃ padmaṃ dhanuḥ kuṇḍikāṃ
daṇḍaṃ śaktimasiṃ ca carma jalajaṃ ghaṇṭāṃ surābhājanam |
śūlaṃ pāśasudarśane ca dadhatīṃ hastaiḥ pravālaprabhāṃ
seve sairibhamardinīmiha mahālakṣmīṃ sarojasthitām ||
Meaning Meditation: I worship here Mahalakshmi, seated upon a lotus, the slayer of Sairibha (the buffalo-demon Mahishasura), coral-hued in radiance, who bears in her hands the rosary, axe, mace, arrow, thunderbolt, lotus, bow, water-pot, staff, spear (shakti), sword, shield, conch, bell, wine-cup, trident, noose, and the Sudarshana discus.
ॐ ह्रीं ऋषिरुवाच ॥ २.१॥
oṃ hrīṃ ṛṣiruvāca || 2.1||
Meaning The Rishi (the sage Medhas) said — (prefaced by the seed-syllables Om Hrim):
देवासुरमभूद्युद्धं पूर्णमब्दशतं पुरा ।
महिषेऽसुराणामधिपे देवानां च पुरन्दरे ॥ २.२॥
devāsuramabhūdyuddhaṃ pūrṇamabdaśataṃ purā |
mahiṣe'surāṇāmadhipe devānāṃ ca purandare || 2.2||
Meaning In ancient times a war raged between the gods and the asuras for a full hundred years, when Mahisha was the lord of the asuras and Indra (Purandara) the lord of the gods.
तत्रासुरैर्महावीर्यैर्देवसैन्यं पराजितम् ।
जित्वा च सकलान् देवानिन्द्रोऽभून्महिषासुरः ॥ २.३॥
tatrāsurairmahāvīryairdevasainyaṃ parājitam |
jitvā ca sakalān devānindro'bhūnmahiṣāsuraḥ || 2.3||
Meaning In that war the mighty, valorous asuras defeated the army of the gods; and, having conquered all the gods, Mahishasura made himself Indra, usurping the sovereignty of heaven.
ततः पराजिता देवाः पद्मयोनिं प्रजापतिम् ।
पुरस्कृत्य गतास्तत्र यत्रेशगरुडध्वजौ ॥ २.४॥
tataḥ parājitā devāḥ padmayoniṃ prajāpatim |
puraskṛtya gatāstatra yatreśagaruḍadhvajau || 2.4||
Meaning Then the vanquished gods, placing at their head Prajapati Brahma, the lotus-born, went to where Isha (Shiva) and the Garuda-bannered one (Vishnu) were.
यथावृत्तं तयोस्तद्वन्महिषासुरचेष्टितम् ।
त्रिदशाः कथयामासुर्देवाभिभवविस्तरम् ॥ २.५॥
yathāvṛttaṃ tayostadvanmahiṣāsuraceṣṭitam |
tridaśāḥ kathayāmāsurdevābhibhavavistaram || 2.5||
Meaning The gods related to those two, Shiva and Vishnu, just as it had come to pass, all the doings of Mahishasura and the full extent of the gods' own defeat.
सूर्येन्द्राग्न्यनिलेन्दूनां यमस्य वरुणस्य च ।
अन्येषां चाधिकारान्स स्वयमेवाधितिष्ठति ॥ २.६॥
sūryendrāgnyanilendūnāṃ yamasya varuṇasya ca |
anyeṣāṃ cādhikārānsa svayamevādhitiṣṭhati || 2.6||
Meaning (They said:) 'That Mahisha has himself seized and now occupies the offices of Surya (sun), Indra, Agni (fire), Anila (wind), Indu (moon), Yama, Varuna, and of the other gods.'
स्वर्गान्निराकृताः सर्वे तेन देवगणा भुवि ।
विचरन्ति यथा मर्त्या महिषेण दुरात्मना ॥ २.७॥
svargānnirākṛtāḥ sarve tena devagaṇā bhuvi |
vicaranti yathā martyā mahiṣeṇa durātmanā || 2.7||
Meaning 'All the hosts of gods, cast out of heaven by that evil-souled Mahisha, wander over the earth like mortals.'
एतद्वः कथितं सर्वममरारिविचेष्टितम् ।
शरणं वः प्रपन्नाः स्मो वधस्तस्य विचिन्त्यताम् ॥ २.८॥
etadvaḥ kathitaṃ sarvamamarāriviceṣṭitam |
śaraṇaṃ vaḥ prapannāḥ smo vadhastasya vicintyatām || 2.8||
Meaning 'All this doing of the gods' enemy has been told to you both; we have come as suppliants to you — now let his slaying be devised.'
इत्थं निशम्य देवानां वचांसि मधुसूदनः ।
चकार कोपं शम्भुश्च भ्रुकुटीकुटिलाननौ ॥ २.९॥
itthaṃ niśamya devānāṃ vacāṃsi madhusūdanaḥ |
cakāra kopaṃ śambhuśca bhrukuṭīkuṭilānanau || 2.9||
Meaning Having heard these words of the gods, Madhusudana (Vishnu) and Shambhu (Shiva) grew wrathful, their faces knit into frowning brows.
ततोऽतिकोपपूर्णस्य चक्रिणो वदनात्ततः ।
निश्चक्राम महत्तेजो ब्रह्मणः शङ्करस्य च ॥ २.१०॥
tato'tikopapūrṇasya cakriṇo vadanāttataḥ |
niścakrāma mahattejo brahmaṇaḥ śaṅkarasya ca || 2.10||
Meaning Then from the face of the discus-bearing Vishnu, filled with intense anger, and likewise from Brahma and Shankara, there issued forth a great energy (tejas).
अन्येषां चैव देवानां शक्रादीनां शरीरतः ।
निर्गतं सुमहत्तेजस्तच्चैक्यं समगच्छत ॥ २.११॥
anyeṣāṃ caiva devānāṃ śakrādīnāṃ śarīrataḥ |
nirgataṃ sumahattejastaccaikyaṃ samagacchata || 2.11||
Meaning And from the bodies of the other gods too — Shakra (Indra) and the rest — a very great energy came forth, and all of it merged into one.
अतीव तेजसः कूटं ज्वलन्तमिव पर्वतम् ।
ददृशुस्ते सुरास्तत्र ज्वालाव्याप्तदिगन्तरम् ॥ २.१२॥
atīva tejasaḥ kūṭaṃ jvalantamiva parvatam |
dadṛśuste surāstatra jvālāvyāptadigantaram || 2.12||
Meaning The gods beheld there a mass of exceedingly great energy, blazing like a mountain, its flames pervading every quarter of space.
अतुलं तत्र तत्तेजः सर्वदेवशरीरजम् ।
एकस्थं तदभून्नारी व्याप्तलोकत्रयं त्विषा ॥ २.१३॥
atulaṃ tatra tattejaḥ sarvadevaśarīrajam |
ekasthaṃ tadabhūnnārī vyāptalokatrayaṃ tviṣā || 2.13||
Meaning That incomparable energy, born from the bodies of all the gods, gathering into one, became a Woman who pervaded the three worlds with her radiance.
यदभूच्छाम्भवं तेजस्तेनाजायत तन्मुखम् ।
याम्येन चाभवन् केशा बाहवो विष्णुतेजसा ॥ २.१४॥
yadabhūcchāmbhavaṃ tejastenājāyata tanmukham |
yāmyena cābhavan keśā bāhavo viṣṇutejasā || 2.14||
Meaning By the energy that was Shiva's (Shambhu's) her face came to be; by Yama's her hair, and her arms by Vishnu's energy.
सौम्येन स्तनयोर्युग्मं मध्यं चैन्द्रेण चाभवत् ।
वारुणेन च जङ्घोरू नितम्बस्तेजसा भुवः ॥ २.१५॥
saumyena stanayoryugmaṃ madhyaṃ caindreṇa cābhavat |
vāruṇena ca jaṅghorū nitambastejasā bhuvaḥ || 2.15||
Meaning By Soma's (the moon's) energy her two breasts, by Indra's her waist, by Varuna's her thighs and shanks, and by the Earth's energy her hips.
ब्रह्मणस्तेजसा पादौ तदङ्गुल्योऽर्कतेजसा ।
वसूनां च कराङ्गुल्यः कौबेरेण च नासिका ॥ २.१६॥
brahmaṇastejasā pādau tadaṅgulyo'rkatejasā |
vasūnāṃ ca karāṅgulyaḥ kaubereṇa ca nāsikā || 2.16||
Meaning By Brahma's energy her feet, by the sun's (arka's) the toes, by the Vasus' the fingers of her hands, and by Kubera's her nose.
तस्यास्तु दन्ताः सम्भूताः प्राजापत्येन तेजसा ।
नयनत्रितयं जज्ञे तथा पावकतेजसा ॥ २.१७॥
tasyāstu dantāḥ sambhūtāḥ prājāpatyena tejasā |
nayanatritayaṃ jajñe tathā pāvakatejasā || 2.17||
Meaning By Prajapati's energy her teeth came into being, and by Agni's (the fire's) energy her three eyes were born.
भ्रुवौ च सन्ध्ययोस्तेजः श्रवणावनिलस्य च ।
अन्येषां चैव देवानां सम्भवस्तेजसां शिवा ॥ २.१८॥
bhruvau ca sandhyayostejaḥ śravaṇāvanilasya ca |
anyeṣāṃ caiva devānāṃ sambhavastejasāṃ śivā || 2.18||
Meaning Her two eyebrows from the energy of the two twilights (sandhyas), her ears from Anila's (the wind's) energy; thus the auspicious Goddess arose from the energies of the other gods as well.
ततः समस्तदेवानां तेजोराशिसमुद्भवाम् ।
तां विलोक्य मुदं प्रापुरमरा महिषार्दिताः ।
ततो देवा ददुस्तस्यै स्वानि स्वान्यायुधानि च ॥ २.१९॥
tataḥ samastadevānāṃ tejorāśisamudbhavām |
tāṃ vilokya mudaṃ prāpuramarā mahiṣārditāḥ |
tato devā dadustasyai svāni svānyāyudhāni ca || 2.19||
Meaning Then, beholding her who had arisen from the massed energy of all the gods, the immortals, tormented by Mahisha, rejoiced. Thereupon the gods gave her their several weapons.
शूलं शूलाद्विनिष्कृष्य ददौ तस्यै पिनाकधृक् ।
चक्रं च दत्तवान् कृष्णः समुत्पाट्य स्वचक्रतः ॥ २.२०॥
śūlaṃ śūlādviniṣkṛṣya dadau tasyai pinākadhṛk |
cakraṃ ca dattavān kṛṣṇaḥ samutpāṭya svacakrataḥ || 2.20||
Meaning The wielder of Pinaka (Shiva) drew a trident out of his own trident and gave it to her; and Krishna (Vishnu) gave a discus, drawing it forth from his own discus.
शङ्खं च वरुणः शक्तिं ददौ तस्यै हुताशनः ।
मारुतो दत्तवांश्चापं बाणपूर्णे तथेषुधी ॥ २.२१॥
śaṅkhaṃ ca varuṇaḥ śaktiṃ dadau tasyai hutāśanaḥ |
māruto dattavāṃścāpaṃ bāṇapūrṇe tatheṣudhī || 2.21||
Meaning Varuna gave a conch, Agni (Hutashana) gave a spear (shakti), and Vayu (Maruta) gave a bow together with two quivers full of arrows.
वज्रमिन्द्रः समुत्पाट्य कुलिशादमराधिपः ।
ददौ तस्यै सहस्राक्षो घण्टामैरावताद्गजात् ॥ २.२२॥
vajramindraḥ samutpāṭya kuliśādamarādhipaḥ |
dadau tasyai sahasrākṣo ghaṇṭāmairāvatādgajāt || 2.22||
Meaning The thousand-eyed Indra, lord of the immortals, drew a thunderbolt out of his own thunderbolt (kulisha) and gave it to her, and a bell from his elephant Airavata.
कालदण्डाद्यमो दण्डं पाशं चाम्बुपतिर्ददौ ।
प्रजापतिश्चाक्षमालां ददौ ब्रह्मा कमण्डलुम् ॥ २.२३॥
kāladaṇḍādyamo daṇḍaṃ pāśaṃ cāmbupatirdadau |
prajāpatiścākṣamālāṃ dadau brahmā kamaṇḍalum || 2.23||
Meaning Yama gave a staff out of his staff of death (kaladanda), and the lord of waters (Varuna) gave a noose; Prajapati gave a rosary of beads and Brahma a water-pot (kamandalu).
समस्तरोमकूपेषु निजरश्मीन् दिवाकरः ।
कालश्च दत्तवान् खड्गं तस्यै चर्म च निर्मलम् ॥ २.२४॥
samastaromakūpeṣu nijaraśmīn divākaraḥ |
kālaśca dattavān khaḍgaṃ tasyai carma ca nirmalam || 2.24||
Meaning The sun (Divakara) set his own rays upon all the pores of her skin, and Kala (Time) gave her a sword and a spotless shield.
क्षीरोदश्चामलं हारमजरे च तथाम्बरे ।
चूडामणिं तथा दिव्यं कुण्डले कटकानि च ॥ २.२५॥
kṣīrodaścāmalaṃ hāramajare ca tathāmbare |
cūḍāmaṇiṃ tathā divyaṃ kuṇḍale kaṭakāni ca || 2.25||
Meaning The ocean of milk (Kshiroda) gave a spotless necklace, a pair of imperishable garments, a divine crest-jewel (chudamani), a pair of earrings, and bracelets.
अर्धचन्द्रं तथा शुभ्रं केयूरान् सर्वबाहुषु ।
नूपुरौ विमलौ तद्वद् ग्रैवेयकमनुत्तमम् ॥ २.२६॥
ardhacandraṃ tathā śubhraṃ keyūrān sarvabāhuṣu |
nūpurau vimalau tadvad graiveyakamanuttamam || 2.26||
Meaning And a bright half-moon ornament, armlets (keyura) for all her arms, likewise a pair of spotless anklets, and a peerless neck-ornament (graiveyaka).
अङ्गुलीयकरत्नानि समस्तास्वङ्गुलीषु च ।
विश्वकर्मा ददौ तस्यै परशुं चातिनिर्मलम् ॥ २.२७॥
aṅgulīyakaratnāni samastāsvaṅgulīṣu ca |
viśvakarmā dadau tasyai paraśuṃ cātinirmalam || 2.27||
Meaning And jewelled rings for all her fingers. Vishvakarma gave her an exceedingly bright axe (parashu).
अस्त्राण्यनेकरूपाणि तथाभेद्यं च दंशनम् ।
अम्लानपङ्कजां मालां शिरस्युरसि चापराम् ॥ २.२८॥
astrāṇyanekarūpāṇi tathābhedyaṃ ca daṃśanam |
amlānapaṅkajāṃ mālāṃ śirasyurasi cāparām || 2.28||
Meaning And weapons of many forms, and impenetrable armour; and a garland of ever-fresh lotuses for her head and another for her breast.
अददज्जलधिस्तस्यै पङ्कजं चातिशोभनम् ।
हिमवान् वाहनं सिंहं रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥ २.२९॥
adadajjaladhistasyai paṅkajaṃ cātiśobhanam |
himavān vāhanaṃ siṃhaṃ ratnāni vividhāni ca || 2.29||
Meaning The ocean (jaladhi) gave her a most beautiful lotus; Himavan (the Himalaya) gave a lion as her mount and various jewels.
ददावशून्यं सुरया पानपात्रं धनाधिपः ।
शेषश्च सर्वनागेशो महामणिविभूषितम् ॥ २.३०॥
dadāvaśūnyaṃ surayā pānapātraṃ dhanādhipaḥ |
śeṣaśca sarvanāgeśo mahāmaṇivibhūṣitam || 2.30||
Meaning The lord of wealth (Kubera) gave a drinking-cup ever-full of wine; and Shesha, lord of all serpents (nagas),
नागहारं ददौ तस्यै धत्ते यः पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
अन्यैरपि सुरैर्देवी भूषणैरायुधैस्तथा ॥ २.३१॥
nāgahāraṃ dadau tasyai dhatte yaḥ pṛthivīmimām |
anyairapi surairdevī bhūṣaṇairāyudhaistathā || 2.31||
Meaning — he who upholds this earth, gave her a serpent-necklace (naga-hara) adorned with great gems. By the other gods too the Goddess was honoured with ornaments and weapons.
सम्मानिता ननादोच्चैः साट्टहासं मुहुर्मुहुः ।
तस्या नादेन घोरेण कृत्स्नमापूरितं नभः ॥ २.३२॥
sammānitā nanādoccaiḥ sāṭṭahāsaṃ muhurmuhuḥ |
tasyā nādena ghoreṇa kṛtsnamāpūritaṃ nabhaḥ || 2.32||
Meaning Thus honoured, the Goddess roared aloud again and again with a great laughter (attahasa). By her terrible roar the whole sky was filled.
अमायतातिमहता प्रतिशब्दो महानभूत् ।
चुक्षुभुः सकला लोकाः समुद्राश्च चकम्पिरे ॥ २.३३॥
amāyatātimahatā pratiśabdo mahānabhūt |
cukṣubhuḥ sakalā lokāḥ samudrāśca cakampire || 2.33||
Meaning From that boundless and exceedingly mighty roar a great reverberating echo arose; all the worlds were shaken and the oceans trembled.
चचाल वसुधा चेलुः सकलाश्च महीधराः ।
जयेति देवाश्च मुदा तामूचुः सिंहवाहिनीम् ॥ २.३४॥
cacāla vasudhā celuḥ sakalāśca mahīdharāḥ |
jayeti devāśca mudā tāmūcuḥ siṃhavāhinīm || 2.34||
Meaning The earth quaked and all the mountains rocked. Then the gods, rejoicing, cried 'Victory!' to her, the lion-borne Goddess (Simhavahini).
तुष्टुवुर्मुनयश्चैनां भक्तिनम्रात्ममूर्तयः ।
दृष्ट्वा समस्तं सङ्क्षुब्धं त्रैलोक्यममरारयः ॥ २.३५॥
tuṣṭuvurmunayaścaināṃ bhaktinamrātmamūrtayaḥ |
dṛṣṭvā samastaṃ saṅkṣubdhaṃ trailokyamamarārayaḥ || 2.35||
Meaning The sages, their bodies bowed low in devotion, extolled her. Seeing the entire three worlds thus agitated, the enemies of the gods (the asuras)
सन्नद्धाखिलसैन्यास्ते समुत्तस्थुरुदायुधाः ।
आः किमेतदिति क्रोधादाभाष्य महिषासुरः ॥ २.३६॥
sannaddhākhilasainyāste samuttasthurudāyudhāḥ |
āḥ kimetaditi krodhādābhāṣya mahiṣāsuraḥ || 2.36||
Meaning — fully mustered their whole armies and rose up with weapons upraised. 'Ah! What is this?' — so crying out in anger, Mahishasura
अभ्यधावत तं शब्दमशेषैरसुरैर्वृतः ।
स ददर्श ततो देवीं व्याप्तलोकत्रयां त्विषा ॥ २.३७॥
abhyadhāvata taṃ śabdamaśeṣairasurairvṛtaḥ |
sa dadarśa tato devīṃ vyāptalokatrayāṃ tviṣā || 2.37||
Meaning — surrounded by all the asuras, rushed toward that sound. He then beheld the Goddess, pervading the three worlds with her radiance,
पादाक्रान्त्या नतभुवं किरीटोल्लिखिताम्बराम् ।
क्षोभिताशेषपातालां धनुर्ज्यानिःस्वनेन ताम् ॥ २.३८॥
pādākrāntyā natabhuvaṃ kirīṭollikhitāmbarām |
kṣobhitāśeṣapātālāṃ dhanurjyāniḥsvanena tām || 2.38||
Meaning who bowed the earth under the tread of her feet, whose crown grazed the sky, and who set all the nether regions trembling with the twang of her bowstring;
दिशो भुजसहस्रेण समन्ताद्व्याप्य संस्थिताम् ।
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तया देव्या सुरद्विषाम् ॥ २.३९॥
diśo bhujasahasreṇa samantādvyāpya saṃsthitām |
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ tayā devyā suradviṣām || 2.39||
Meaning who stood pervading all the quarters on every side with her thousand arms. Then began the battle between that Goddess and the foes of the gods.
शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा मुक्तैरादीपितदिगन्तरम् ।
महिषासुरसेनानीश्चिक्षुराख्यो महासुरः ॥ २.४०॥
śastrāstrairbahudhā muktairādīpitadigantaram |
mahiṣāsurasenānīścikṣurākhyo mahāsuraḥ || 2.40||
Meaning The quarters blazed with the many weapons and missiles hurled on every side. Chikshura, the great asura, the commander of Mahishasura's army,
युयुधे चामरश्चान्यैश्चतुरङ्गबलान्वितः ।
रथानामयुतैः षड्भिरुदग्राख्यो महासुरः ॥ २.४१॥
yuyudhe cāmaraścānyaiścaturaṅgabalānvitaḥ |
rathānāmayutaiḥ ṣaḍbhirudagrākhyo mahāsuraḥ || 2.41||
Meaning — fought, arrayed with a fourfold army, together with Chamara and other asuras. The great asura named Udagra with sixty thousand (six ayutas) chariots,
अयुध्यतायुतानां च सहस्रेण महाहनुः ।
पञ्चाशद्भिश्च नियुतैरसिलोमा महासुरः ॥ २.४२॥
ayudhyatāyutānāṃ ca sahasreṇa mahāhanuḥ |
pañcāśadbhiśca niyutairasilomā mahāsuraḥ || 2.42||
Meaning and Mahahanu fought with a thousand ayutas (one crore); the great asura Asiloma with fifty niyutas (five crore),
अयुतानां शतैः षड्भिर्बाष्कलो युयुधे रणे ।
गजवाजिसहस्रौघैरनेकैः परिवारितः ॥ २.४३॥
ayutānāṃ śataiḥ ṣaḍbhirbāṣkalo yuyudhe raṇe |
gajavājisahasraughairanekaiḥ parivāritaḥ || 2.43||
Meaning Bashkala fought in the battle with six hundred ayutas (sixty lakh), surrounded by many thousand-strong hosts of elephants and horses.
वृतो रथानां कोट्या च युद्धे तस्मिन्नयुध्यत ।
बिडालाख्योऽयुतानां च पञ्चाशद्भिरथायुतैः ॥ २.४४॥
vṛto rathānāṃ koṭyā ca yuddhe tasminnayudhyata |
biḍālākhyo'yutānāṃ ca pañcāśadbhirathāyutaiḥ || 2.44||
Meaning Surrounded by a crore of chariots, he fought in that battle. And the one named Bidala, with fifty ayutas of ayutas (five hundred crore) of chariots,
युयुधे संयुगे तत्र रथानां परिवारितः ।
अन्ये च तत्रायुतशो रथनागहयैर्वृताः ॥ २.४५॥
yuyudhe saṃyuge tatra rathānāṃ parivāritaḥ |
anye ca tatrāyutaśo rathanāgahayairvṛtāḥ || 2.45||
Meaning — fought there in that battle, surrounded by chariots. And others too there, in tens of thousands (ayutas), surrounded by chariots, elephants and horses,
युयुधुः संयुगे देव्या सह तत्र महासुराः ।
कोटिकोटिसहस्रैस्तु रथानां दन्तिनां तथा ॥ २.४६॥
yuyudhuḥ saṃyuge devyā saha tatra mahāsurāḥ |
koṭikoṭisahasraistu rathānāṃ dantināṃ tathā || 2.46||
Meaning those great asuras fought there with the Goddess. With thousands of crores upon crores of chariots and elephants,
हयानां च वृतो युद्धे तत्राभून्महिषासुरः ।
तोमरैर्भिन्दिपालैश्च शक्तिभिर्मुसलैस्तथा ॥ २.४७॥
hayānāṃ ca vṛto yuddhe tatrābhūnmahiṣāsuraḥ |
tomarairbhindipālaiśca śaktibhirmusalaistathā || 2.47||
Meaning and horses surrounding him, Mahishasura too was there in the battle. With tomaras (iron clubs), bhindipalas (missiles), spears (shakti) and maces (musala),
युयुधुः संयुगे देव्या खड्गैः परशुपट्टिशैः ।
केचिच्च चिक्षिपुः शक्तीः केचित् पाशांस्तथापरे ॥ २.४८॥
yuyudhuḥ saṃyuge devyā khaḍgaiḥ paraśupaṭṭiśaiḥ |
kecicca cikṣipuḥ śaktīḥ kecit pāśāṃstathāpare || 2.48||
Meaning and with swords, axes and pattishas (sharp lances), the asuras fought with the Goddess. Some hurled spears, others nooses,
देवीं खड्गप्रहारैस्तु ते तां हन्तुं प्रचक्रमुः ।
सापि देवी ततस्तानि शस्त्राण्यस्त्राणि चण्डिका ॥ २.४९॥
devīṃ khaḍgaprahāraistu te tāṃ hantuṃ pracakramuḥ |
sāpi devī tatastāni śastrāṇyastrāṇi caṇḍikā || 2.49||
Meaning and with sword-blows they set about to slay the Goddess. But that Goddess Chandika, then, those weapons and missiles
लीलयैव प्रचिच्छेद निजशस्त्रास्त्रवर्षिणी ।
अनायस्तानना देवी स्तूयमाना सुरर्षिभिः ॥ २.५०॥
līlayaiva praciccheda nijaśastrāstravarṣiṇī |
anāyastānanā devī stūyamānā surarṣibhiḥ || 2.50||
Meaning — cut asunder as if in mere play, while raining down her own weapons and missiles. The Goddess's face was untroubled and unwearied, and she was praised by gods and sages.
मुमोचासुरदेहेषु शस्त्राण्यस्त्राणि चेश्वरी ।
सोऽपि क्रुद्धो धुतसटो देव्या वाहनकेसरी ॥ २.५१॥
mumocāsuradeheṣu śastrāṇyastrāṇi ceśvarī |
so'pi kruddho dhutasaṭo devyā vāhanakesarī || 2.51||
Meaning The Goddess (the Ishvari) hurled weapons and missiles into the bodies of the asuras. Meanwhile her mount, the lion, enraged, shaking its mane,
चचारासुरसैन्येषु वनेष्विव हुताशनः ।
निःश्वासान् मुमुचे यांश्च युध्यमाना रणेऽम्बिका ॥ २.५२॥
cacārāsurasainyeṣu vaneṣviva hutāśanaḥ |
niḥśvāsān mumuce yāṃśca yudhyamānā raṇe'mbikā || 2.52||
Meaning — roamed among the armies of the asuras like fire amid forests. And the breaths (nihshvasa) that Ambika released while fighting in the battle,
त एव सद्यः सम्भूता गणाः शतसहस्रशः ।
युयुधुस्ते परशुभिर्भिन्दिपालासिपट्टिशैः ॥ २.५३॥
ta eva sadyaḥ sambhūtā gaṇāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ |
yuyudhuste paraśubhirbhindipālāsipaṭṭiśaiḥ || 2.53||
Meaning those very breaths at once became hosts (ganas) by the hundreds and thousands. They fought with axes, bhindipalas, swords and pattishas,
नाशयन्तोऽसुरगणान् देवीशक्त्युपबृंहिताः ।
अवादयन्त पटहान् गणाः शङ्खांस्तथापरे ॥ २.५४॥
nāśayanto'suragaṇān devīśaktyupabṛṃhitāḥ |
avādayanta paṭahān gaṇāḥ śaṅkhāṃstathāpare || 2.54||
Meaning — destroying the hosts of asuras, reinforced by the Goddess's power. Some of the ganas sounded war-drums (patahas), others conches,
मृदङ्गांश्च तथैवान्ये तस्मिन् युद्धमहोत्सवे ।
ततो देवी त्रिशूलेन गदया शक्तिवृष्टिभिः ॥ २.५५॥
mṛdaṅgāṃśca tathaivānye tasmin yuddhamahotsave |
tato devī triśūlena gadayā śaktivṛṣṭibhiḥ || 2.55||
Meaning and yet others played mridangas in that great festival of war. Then the Goddess, with her trident, her mace, and showers of spears,
खड्गादिभिश्च शतशो निजघान महासुरान् ।
पातयामास चैवान्यान् घण्टास्वनविमोहितान् ॥ २.५६॥
khaḍgādibhiśca śataśo nijaghāna mahāsurān |
pātayāmāsa caivānyān ghaṇṭāsvanavimohitān || 2.56||
Meaning and with swords and other weapons, slew great asuras by the hundreds; and she struck down others who were stupefied by the sound of her bell.
असुरान् भुवि पाशेन बद्ध्वा चान्यानकर्षयत् ।
केचिद् द्विधाकृतास्तीक्ष्णैः खड्गपातैस्तथापरे ॥ २.५७॥
asurān bhuvi pāśena baddhvā cānyānakarṣayat |
kecid dvidhākṛtāstīkṣṇaiḥ khaḍgapātaistathāpare || 2.57||
Meaning Binding some asuras to the ground with her noose, she dragged them along, and others she cut in two with the strokes of her sharp sword.
विपोथिता निपातेन गदया भुवि शेरते ।
वेमुश्च केचिद्रुधिरं मुसलेन भृशं हताः ॥ २.५८॥
vipothitā nipātena gadayā bhuvi śerate |
vemuśca kecidrudhiraṃ musalena bhṛśaṃ hatāḥ || 2.58||
Meaning Some, crushed by the blow of her mace, lay upon the ground; and some, sorely struck by her club (musala), vomited blood.
केचिन्निपतिता भूमौ भिन्नाः शूलेन वक्षसि ।
निरन्तराः शरौघेण कृताः केचिद्रणाजिरे ॥ २.५९॥
kecinnipatitā bhūmau bhinnāḥ śūlena vakṣasi |
nirantarāḥ śaraugheṇa kṛtāḥ kecidraṇājire || 2.59||
Meaning Some fell to the earth, pierced through the breast by her trident; and some on the battlefield were riddled through and through by floods of arrows.
श्येनानुकारिणः प्राणान् मुमुचुस्त्रिदशार्दनाः ।
केषाञ्चिद् बाहवश्छिन्नाश्छिन्नग्रीवास्तथापरे ॥ २.६०॥
śyenānukāriṇaḥ prāṇān mumucustridaśārdanāḥ |
keṣāñcid bāhavaśchinnāśchinnagrīvāstathāpare || 2.60||
Meaning Those tormentors of the gods gave up their lives, their vital breaths departing swiftly like hawks. The arms of some were severed, others had their necks cut through,
शिरांसि पेतुरन्येषामन्ये मध्ये विदारिताः ।
विच्छिन्नजङ्घास्त्वपरे पेतुरुर्व्यां महासुराः ॥ २.६१॥
śirāṃsi peturanyeṣāmanye madhye vidāritāḥ |
vicchinnajaṅghāstvapare petururvyāṃ mahāsurāḥ || 2.61||
Meaning The heads of some fell off, others were split through the middle, and yet other great asuras, their legs cut off, fell upon the earth.
एकबाह्वक्षिचरणाः केचिद्देव्या द्विधाकृताः ।
छिन्नेऽपि चान्ये शिरसि पतिताः पुनरुत्थिताः ॥ २.६२॥
ekabāhvakṣicaraṇāḥ keciddevyā dvidhākṛtāḥ |
chinne'pi cānye śirasi patitāḥ punarutthitāḥ || 2.62||
Meaning Some, cleft in two by the Goddess, were left with but a single arm, eye and leg; and others, though their heads were severed, having fallen, rose up again.
कबन्धा युयुधुर्देव्या गृहीतपरमायुधाः ।
ननृतुश्चापरे तत्र युद्धे तूर्यलयाश्रिताः ॥ २.६३॥
kabandhā yuyudhurdevyā gṛhītaparamāyudhāḥ |
nanṛtuścāpare tatra yuddhe tūryalayāśritāḥ || 2.63||
Meaning Headless trunks (kabandhas), grasping choice weapons, fought with the Goddess; and others danced there in the battle, keeping time to the rhythm of the instruments.
कबन्धाश्छिन्नशिरसः खड्गशक्त्यृष्टिपाणयः ।
तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति भाषन्तो देवीमन्ये महासुराः ॥ २.६४॥
kabandhāśchinnaśirasaḥ khaḍgaśaktyṛṣṭipāṇayaḥ |
tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti bhāṣanto devīmanye mahāsurāḥ || 2.64||
Meaning Those headless trunks, their heads cut off, with swords, spears and double-edged lances (rishti) in their hands, crying 'Stop! Stop!' advanced upon the Goddess — such were yet other great asuras.
पातितै रथनागाश्वैरसुरैश्च वसुन्धरा ।
अगम्या साभवत्तत्र यत्राभूत् स महारणः ॥ २.६५॥
pātitai rathanāgāśvairasuraiśca vasundharā |
agamyā sābhavattatra yatrābhūt sa mahāraṇaḥ || 2.65||
Meaning With chariots, elephants, horses and asuras all fallen, the ground where that great battle was fought became impassable.
शोणितौघा महानद्यः सद्यस्तत्र प्रसुस्रुवुः ।
मध्ये चासुरसैन्यस्य वारणासुरवाजिनाम् ॥ २.६६॥
śoṇitaughā mahānadyaḥ sadyastatra prasusruvuḥ |
madhye cāsurasainyasya vāraṇāsuravājinām || 2.66||
Meaning Streams of blood, like great rivers, at once flowed forth there in the midst of the asura army — the blood of elephants, asuras and horses.
क्षणेन तन्महासैन्यमसुराणां तथाम्बिका ।
निन्ये क्षयं यथा वह्निस्तृणदारुमहाचयम् ॥ २.६७॥
kṣaṇena tanmahāsainyamasurāṇāṃ tathāmbikā |
ninye kṣayaṃ yathā vahnistṛṇadārumahācayam || 2.67||
Meaning As fire consumes a great heap of straw and wood, so in a single moment Ambika brought that vast army of the asuras to destruction.
स च सिंहो महानादमुत्सृजन् धुतकेसरः ।
शरीरेभ्योऽमरारीणामसूनिव विचिन्वति ॥ २.६८॥
sa ca siṃho mahānādamutsṛjan dhutakesaraḥ |
śarīrebhyo'marārīṇāmasūniva vicinvati || 2.68||
Meaning And that lion, shaking its mane, roared aloud, as though searching out and plucking the very life-breaths from the bodies of the gods' enemies.
देव्या गणैश्च तैस्तत्र कृतं युद्धं तथासुरैः ।
यथैषां तुतुषुर्देवाः पुष्पवृष्टिमुचो दिवि ॥ २.६९॥
devyā gaṇaiśca taistatra kṛtaṃ yuddhaṃ tathāsuraiḥ |
yathaiṣāṃ tutuṣurdevāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭimuco divi || 2.69||
Meaning There the Goddess and her hosts waged such a battle with the asuras that the gods, well pleased with them, rained down flowers from the heavens.
