ॐ उत्तप्तहेमरुचिरां रविचन्द्रवह्नि-
नेत्रां धनुश्शरयुताङ्कुशपाशशूलम् ।
रम्यैर्भुजैश्च दधतीं शिवशक्तिरूपां
कामेश्वरीं हृदि भजामि धृतेन्दुलेखाम् ॥

oṃ uttaptahemarucirāṃ ravicandravahni-
netrāṃ dhanuśśarayutāṅkuśapāśaśūlam |
ramyairbhujaiśca dadhatīṃ śivaśaktirūpāṃ
kāmeśvarīṃ hṛdi bhajāmi dhṛtendulekhām ||
Meaning Meditation verse. I worship in my heart the Goddess Kāmeśvarī — radiant as molten gold, whose three eyes are the sun, moon, and fire, who holds in her lovely arms the bow, arrow, goad, noose, and spear, who is of the very form of Śiva-Śakti, and who bears the crescent moon upon her head.
ॐ ऋषिरुवाच ॥ १०.१॥
oṃ ṛṣiruvāca || 10.1||
निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसम्मितम् ।
हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥ १०.२॥
niśumbhaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṃ prāṇasammitam |
hanyamānaṃ balaṃ caiva śumbhaḥ kruddho'bravīdvacaḥ || 10.2||
Meaning Seeing his brother Niśumbha — dear to him as his own life — slain, and his army too being cut down, Śumbha, filled with wrath, spoke these words:
बलावलेपदुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्वमावह ।
अन्यासां बलमाश्रित्य युद्ध्यसे चातिमानिनी ॥ १०.३॥
balāvalepaduṣṭe tvaṃ mā durge garvamāvaha |
anyāsāṃ balamāśritya yuddhyase cātimāninī || 10.3||
Meaning O Durgā, corrupted by the arrogance of your strength — do not vaunt your pride! Vain as you are, you fight only by relying on the might of others.
देव्युवाच ॥ १०.४॥
devyuvāca || 10.4||
Meaning The Goddess said:
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा ।
पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः ॥ १०.५॥
ekaivāhaṃ jagatyatra dvitīyā kā mamāparā |
paśyaitā duṣṭa mayyeva viśantyo madvibhūtayaḥ || 10.5||
Meaning I alone exist in this world; who else is there besides me, a second one? Behold, O wicked one — these are but my own powers (vibhūtis), now entering back into me.
ततः समस्तास्ता देव्यो ब्रह्माणीप्रमुखा लयम् ।
तस्या देव्यास्तनौ जग्मुरेकैवासीत्तदाम्बिका ॥ १०.६॥
tataḥ samastāstā devyo brahmāṇīpramukhā layam |
tasyā devyāstanau jagmurekaivāsīttadāmbikā || 10.6||
Meaning Then all those goddesses, headed by Brāhmaṇī, dissolved into the body of that Goddess; and Ambikā alone remained, one without a second.
देव्युवाच ॥ १०.७॥
devyuvāca || 10.7||
Meaning The Goddess said:
अहं विभूत्या बहुभिरिह रूपैर्यदास्थिता ।
तत्संहृतं मयैकैव तिष्ठाम्याजौ स्थिरो भव ॥ १०.८॥
ahaṃ vibhūtyā bahubhiriha rūpairyadāsthitā |
tatsaṃhṛtaṃ mayaikaiva tiṣṭhāmyājau sthiro bhava || 10.8||
Meaning The many forms in which I stood here by my own power — all that I have now withdrawn into myself, and I remain alone. Stand firm in the battle!
ऋषिरुवाच ॥ १०.९॥
ṛṣiruvāca || 10.9||
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं देव्याः शुम्भस्य चोभयोः ।
पश्यतां सर्वदेवानामसुराणां च दारुणम् ॥ १०.१०॥
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ devyāḥ śumbhasya cobhayoḥ |
paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāmasurāṇāṃ ca dāruṇam || 10.10||
Meaning Thereupon a terrible battle broke out between the two, the Goddess and Śumbha, as all the gods and asuras looked on.
शरवर्षैः शितैः शस्त्रैस्तथा चास्त्रैः सुदारुणैः ।
तयोर्युद्धमभूद्भूयः सर्वलोकभयङ्करम् ॥ १०.११॥
śaravarṣaiḥ śitaiḥ śastraistathā cāstraiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ |
tayoryuddhamabhūdbhūyaḥ sarvalokabhayaṅkaram || 10.11||
Meaning With showers of arrows, sharp weapons, and most fearsome missiles, the battle between the two raged once more, terrifying to all the worlds.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे यान्यथाम्बिका ।
बभञ्ज तानि दैत्येन्द्रस्तत्प्रतीघातकर्तृभिः ॥ १०.१२॥
divyānyastrāṇi śataśo mumuce yānyathāmbikā |
babhañja tāni daityendrastatpratīghātakartṛbhiḥ || 10.12||
Meaning The hundreds of divine missiles that Ambikā discharged, the lord of the Daityas broke apart with weapons that repelled them.
मुक्तानि तेन चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि परमेश्वरी ।
बभञ्ज लीलयैवोग्रहुङ्कारोच्चारणादिभिः ॥ १०.१३॥
muktāni tena cāstrāṇi divyāni parameśvarī |
babhañja līlayaivograhuṅkāroccāraṇādibhiḥ || 10.13||
Meaning And the divine missiles hurled by him, the Supreme Goddess shattered as if in mere play, by uttering fierce battle-cries and the like.
ततः शरशतैर्देवीमाच्छादयत सोऽसुरः ।
सापि तत्कुपिता देवी धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुभिः ॥ १०.१४॥
tataḥ śaraśatairdevīmācchādayata so'suraḥ |
sāpi tatkupitā devī dhanuściccheda ceṣubhiḥ || 10.14||
Meaning Then that asura covered the Goddess with hundreds of arrows; angered at this, the Goddess cut his bow to pieces with her arrows.
छिन्ने धनुषि दैत्येन्द्रस्तथा शक्तिमथाददे ।
चिच्छेद देवी चक्रेण तामप्यस्य करे स्थिताम् ॥ १०.१५॥
chinne dhanuṣi daityendrastathā śaktimathādade |
ciccheda devī cakreṇa tāmapyasya kare sthitām || 10.15||
Meaning His bow cut, the lord of the Daityas then took up a śakti-spear; but the Goddess, with her discus, cut that too even as it lay in his hand.
ततः खड्गमुपादाय शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ।
अभ्यधा वत तां देवीं दैत्यानामधिपेश्वरः ॥ १०.१६॥
tataḥ khaḍgamupādāya śatacandraṃ ca bhānumat |
abhyadhā vata tāṃ devīṃ daityānāmadhipeśvaraḥ || 10.16||
Meaning Then the sovereign lord of the Daityas, taking up a sword and a gleaming shield marked with a hundred moons, rushed upon the Goddess.
तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका ।
धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम् ।
अश्वांश्च पातयामास रथं सारथिना सह ॥ १०.१७॥
tasyāpatata evāśu khaḍgaṃ ciccheda caṇḍikā |
dhanurmuktaiḥ śitairbāṇaiścarma cārkakarāmalam |
aśvāṃśca pātayāmāsa rathaṃ sārathinā saha || 10.17||
Meaning As he charged, Caṇḍikā swiftly cut his sword, and with sharp arrows loosed from her bow she cut his shield — spotless as the sun's rays — and struck down his horses and his chariot along with its charioteer.
हताश्वः स तदा दैत्यश्छिन्नधन्वा विसारथिः ।
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरमम्बिकानिधनोद्यतः ॥ १०.१८॥
hatāśvaḥ sa tadā daityaśchinnadhanvā visārathiḥ |
jagrāha mudgaraṃ ghoramambikānidhanodyataḥ || 10.18||
Meaning His horses slain, his bow severed, and his charioteer gone, the Daitya then seized a terrible mace, bent on killing Ambikā.
चिच्छेदापततस्तस्य मुद्गरं निशितैः शरैः ।
तथापि सोऽभ्यधावत्तां मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान् ॥ १०.१९॥
cicchedāpatatastasya mudgaraṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ |
tathāpi so'bhyadhāvattāṃ muṣṭimudyamya vegavān || 10.19||
Meaning As he rushed on, she cut his mace with sharp arrows; yet even so he charged at her impetuously, raising his fist.
स मुष्टिं पातयामास हृदये दैत्यपुङ्गवः ।
देव्यास्तं चापि सा देवी तलेनोरस्यताडयत् ॥ १०.२०॥
sa muṣṭiṃ pātayāmāsa hṛdaye daityapuṅgavaḥ |
devyāstaṃ cāpi sā devī talenorasyatāḍayat || 10.20||
Meaning That bull among Daityas struck his fist upon the Goddess's breast; and the Goddess in turn struck him on the chest with the flat of her palm.
तलप्रहाराभिहतो निपपात महीतले ।
स दैत्यराजः सहसा पुनरेव तथोत्थितः ॥ १०.२१॥
talaprahārābhihato nipapāta mahītale |
sa daityarājaḥ sahasā punareva tathotthitaḥ || 10.21||
Meaning Struck by that blow of her palm, the king of the Daityas fell to the ground; but all at once he sprang up again as before.
उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः ।
तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका ॥ १०.२२॥
utpatya ca pragṛhyoccairdevīṃ gaganamāsthitaḥ |
tatrāpi sā nirādhārā yuyudhe tena caṇḍikā || 10.22||
Meaning Leaping up and seizing the Goddess, he rose high and stood in the sky; there too Caṇḍikā, resting on nothing, fought with him.
नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम् ।
चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम् ॥ १०.२३॥
niyuddhaṃ khe tadā daityaścaṇḍikā ca parasparam |
cakratuḥ prathamaṃ siddhamunivismayakārakam || 10.23||
Meaning Then the Daitya and Caṇḍikā waged hand-to-hand combat in the sky, one unheard of before and astonishing to the siddhas and sages.
ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह ।
उत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले ॥ १०.२४॥
tato niyuddhaṃ suciraṃ kṛtvā tenāmbikā saha |
utpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa cikṣepa dharaṇītale || 10.24||
Meaning Having thus grappled with him for a very long while, Ambikā lifted him up, whirled him about, and hurled him down to the earth.
स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान् ।
अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया ॥ १०.२५॥
sa kṣipto dharaṇīṃ prāpya muṣṭimudyamya vegavān |
abhyadhāvata duṣṭātmā caṇḍikānidhanecchayā || 10.25||
Meaning Flung down, the wicked-souled one, on reaching the earth, raised his fist and rushed swiftly at Caṇḍikā, longing to slay her.
तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम् ।
जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि ॥ १०.२६॥
tamāyāntaṃ tato devī sarvadaityajaneśvaram |
jagatyāṃ pātayāmāsa bhittvā śūlena vakṣasi || 10.26||
Meaning Then, as that lord of all the Daitya folk came on, the Goddess pierced his breast with her spear and cast him down to the earth.
स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवी शूलाग्रविक्षतः ।
चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम् ॥ १०.२७॥
sa gatāsuḥ papātorvyāṃ devī śūlāgravikṣataḥ |
cālayan sakalāṃ pṛthvīṃ sābdhidvīpāṃ saparvatām || 10.27||
Meaning Pierced by the point of the Goddess's spear and lifeless, he fell upon the earth, shaking the whole world with its seas, islands, and mountains.
ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि ।
जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः ॥ १०.२८॥
tataḥ prasannamakhilaṃ hate tasmin durātmani |
jagatsvāsthyamatīvāpa nirmalaṃ cābhavannabhaḥ || 10.28||
Meaning When that evil-souled one was slain, the whole universe grew serene; the world attained supreme well-being, and the sky became clear.
उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः ।
सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते ॥ १०.२९॥
utpātameghāḥ solkā ye prāgāsaṃste śamaṃ yayuḥ |
sarito mārgavāhinyastathāsaṃstatra pātite || 10.29||
Meaning The portentous clouds with their meteors, which had appeared before, now subsided; and when he had been slain, the rivers flowed once more along their proper courses.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भरमानसाः ।
बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः ॥ १०.३०॥
tato devagaṇāḥ sarve harṣanirbharamānasāḥ |
babhūvurnihate tasmin gandharvā lalitaṃ jaguḥ || 10.30||
Meaning When he was slain, all the hosts of gods became filled with joy in their hearts, and the Gandharvas sang sweetly.
अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ।
ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः ॥ १०.३१॥
avādayaṃstathaivānye nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ |
vavuḥ puṇyāstathā vātāḥ suprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ || 10.31||
Meaning Others struck up their instruments, and the throngs of apsarās danced; holy breezes blew, and the sun grew bright and fair.
जज्वलुश्चाग्नयः शान्ताः शान्ता दिग्जनितस्वनाः ॥ १०.३२॥
jajvaluścāgnayaḥ śāntāḥ śāntā digjanitasvanāḥ || 10.32||
Meaning The sacred fires, which had earlier grown still, now blazed up peacefully; and the ominous sounds that had risen in the quarters of the sky fell silent.
